I was fortune to stumble across the financial independence, retire early (FIRE) movement in my early thirties and it helped me significantly change the financial direction of my life.
We aren’t crazy frugal, but I had so many bad habits previously that I was able to adjust which has had a considerable impact financially.
Life is hard enough as it is, and when I was acting like an idiot from a financial perspective I was making life a lot harder.

For those complaining about boomers i get it but you need to pay attention
Justin Trudeau is GenX, as is Mark Carney. I also believe the average age for MPs is GenX. Only 1/5 of our MPs are over 60 (61 is GenX) and the % is dropping every year.
Its GenX that put Canada where it is today and is the generation in charge for more than a decade.

The end of the article about the difference between a couple and a single retiree is depressing. It’s almost like public policy punishes single people, and for absolutely no reason.

I’d be interested to see these figures split between mortgage free homeowners and renters. The same income can mean a fairly comfortable retirement or a constant struggle depending on whether it has to cover rent.
That also matters for younger folks reading this to figure out what they’ll need. How much of “retirees are making it work” depends on having bought a home decades ago?
