I want the government to legislate every facet of my health like a head of cattle so I can be the best boy.
It’s funny how there is moral outrage about drug use funding criminals whenever cannabis regulation is raised, but this ban will do nothing except replace taxable income with black market money going towards those exact same criminals who will use it to fund downpayments on cocaine and heroin and harm our communities.
They came for the vapes, what to stop them coming for the pints.
This is a good step. Now cities like Galway have to start limiting the number of shops that open. It seems like there’s one in every street corner with three in between.

Why not treat vapes as cigarettes and allow their sale only from a cupboard, not visible. And ban all that look like sweeties.

Prohibition of alcohol didn’t work out so well for the US when they tried it. Dealing with the criminality that will come of this will be massive net drain of the states resources.

Total bans never help. Make them even more expensive and unaffordable. People will find a way to overcome those restrictions and bans without any problem.

Vapes made me and many others quit smoking years ago. Are they not taking this into account.
I am really surprised at the amount of people who are ok with rights being stripped away from them. I get it that smoking is bad for everyone in the vicinity of it – but I think it’s a much better idea to have designated smoking areas than to create a society where some citizens have more rights than others.
Not only is it a completely useless and uneforceable bit of legislation (what stops people from simply selling smokes to those born after 2009?), it’s also just unfair.

This is classic FFG policy making. 80% of the population do not smoke or vape. Same way they all became massive friends of the LGBT community **after** 85% of the population voted to legalise same-sex marriage. These are not decisions. Also, aside from the fact he thinks people will agree with him, it stands to do absolutely very little good in the long term. Nothing, absolutely nothing will make smoking or vaping more appealing to teenagers than outlawing it, it reduces tax take and creates a black market, and it raises questions as to why they do not take a stronger stance on other products that cause strain on the health service ie alcohol.
I get that this is well intentioned. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t also short sighted.
All a ban achieves is forcing product onto the black market and enriching people we probably don’t want to.
Would much rather Government invest in spreading awareness of the dangers than a ban, and make it easier to dispose of vaping products (and waste in general, which we are shocking at) so they’re not being littered everywhere.
Not to mention…can we not just people live and let live? We can’t nanny state our way out of every problem.
It’d make a lot more sense to just ban flavoured vapes and kid-friendly packaging
I mean, isn’t there fairly conclusive evidence at this stage that banning things outright only causes more issues i.e. handing over power and profit to the black market, not knowing how safe the products will be, missing out on millions in potential tax and using it to offset any negative effects?
Accepting the reality that there is a demand for these products and developing targeted and reasonable regulation is the best way to solve these issues.
Everyone has an unhealthy vice, I smoke and way to much, but don’t drink eat healthy. Doesn’t mean I’m mitigating my losses but if there banning smokes, then do something about this over processed and gmo food we have??
Need some common sense in the government
How are they going to fill the nearly €1bn shortfall in tax revenue in 18 years time from the sale of cigarettes?
Its madness like the Vape Tax brought in. A couple of Irish Vape Suppliers opened a “shop” in the north and have continued to sell online, northern vape shops have never been as a busy.
So while there is merrit in this, until there is a United Ireland or legleslation like this is brought in simultaneously with Stormount then its bound to fail..
Oh so the govt is stripping a person of the freedom of choice ? What’s next ? Slippery slope lads…
Ban McDonald’s. Every takeaway in the country. Get rid of all full sugar fizzy drinks. All alcohol. Forget the idea of legalising weed.
Then ensure we have everyone wearing SPF before leaving their property. Make sure they’ve showered properly to ensure they aren’t leaving a bad odour.
The arguments around the support for bans on cigarettes or vapes, have always, and will always be baseless bollox. But if we’re going to let the government, mind you one of the most ineffective and useless fucking cunts of a government on the planet, dictate what should be sold to you based on how it impacts your health, get ready to stand by that when someone calls you a hypocrite for enjoying those unhealthy habits of yours.
Because prohibition has been shown to work.

Its not about banning shit its about changing the culture around it. Go to somewhere like Costa Rica, cigarettes are extremely cheap like less than a chocolate bar cheap but the people there really frown upon smoking they know how disgusting it is and majority of outdoor spaces (bars, cafes etc) dont allow the smoking there you literally have to go on the street and even then you get looked at. Nothing will change if the culture around smoking doesnt change
