    1. So… the real news is, that this text locks US in NATO. It states that no country outside NATO can ever have bases in Greenland. The rest of the text is largely what they already had since 1951.
      Well played, Denmark.

“No state that is not a member of NATO shall be allowed to establish its own manned or unmanned military installations in Greenland nor shall they be allowed a persistent presence of military forces in Greenland, unless otherwise agreed by the Parties.”

This “deal” reads like something career diplomats and professionals in defense scrambled together to tell a useless senile tangerine that “he won” while absolutely changing nothing. It is silly shit you do to placate a person with the emotional regulation of a toddler but with command authority.

r/europe has already decided that either (a) the deal is exactly the same as the one already in place or (b) Denmark has failed somehow by giving in to Mr Trump.

Mere evidence of what the agreement actually is won’t change this.

    4. This “new” agreement is a win for Denmark, NATO and Europe.

It mostly just states that russia, china and other non allied nations can’t establish bases there and that they possibly might not be allowed to invest there either.

I don’t mind that at all.

If anything it just keeps USA in NATO.

Thank you Donaldo, I think you actually believed that we were crazy green hair socialists in this side of the pond and were dying to have the Chinese and Russias in there.

    6. I thought Trump would want to leave Nato but from this it says that countries that are not Nato members, cannot have bases so in the end nothing changes and the US can only have bases if they’re in Nato.

    7. It’s a win for trump in the sense that, with the midterms looming and his approval rate getting dangerously low, he now can (and most certainly will) say “I promised you Greenland, we got Greenland”. Yes, some will say “hold on, isn’t this largely what we already had?” but for most it’ll be a great MAGA triumph, and it will likely boost the GOP votes.

    8. I saw people criticizing Denmark over this. Unless Trump renegs on this deal within 2 years, it was genius.

      I only see one flaw

    9. All in all, the USA managed to create a massive diplomatic blunder with no real gain. But the loss is immeasurable.

    10. The US could have gotten the same deal through regular diplomacy in a fraction of the time and without alienating its most important allies. But Trump and his whole admin are so desperate to look “tough” that they gained very little at a huge cost. Art of the deal I guess.

    11. If the US had competent diplomats in charge they could have signed that same deal without alienating Denmark, Greenland and most of the EU.
I guess Trump doesn’t care if the whole world hates and distrusts Americans.

    12. Everyone claiming this is the same agreement as before.  Before the US did not have veto power of foreign investment into Greenland.  Now they do.  It’s so weird people are trying to push blatantly false information.  This new agreement absolutely expanded on the original agreement and no matter how much you want to repeat otherwise doesn’t make that true

The US might have the biggest military in the world. They might have nukes. They might have unrivalled economic powers.

But they have nothing that rivals a danish “working group”.

      Burecajitsu at its finest

    14. Still trying to understand what Trump’s crony gets out of it.  I forget his name but there’s def been some American saying “take Greenland”

    15. This makes Denmark and Greenland look weak, as it shows that we’ve put up with threats of force manipulation campaigns, “special envoys”, and mockery, yet we still allow them a slightly better deal than before.

      Shameful really.

    16. Aside from other major one-sided concessions to the US, doesn’t “*XI. Permanent nature of this Agreement*” give every NATO state a de-facto veto on the independence of Greenland, whatever the Danish and Greenlandic government decide?

It’s specified that before Greenland is allowed to become independent it must assume all the relevant defense treaty responsibilities Denmark has agreed to, which in this case means becoming a NATO state, among other things.

If and when that happens, such a process would be held up by e.g. Turkey deciding to drag out the process as part of some horse trading excercise, as happened with Sweden and Finland recently.

    17. Here is a link to a Danish explanation of the differences between the 1951 and 2026 treaty. https://nyheder.tv2.dk/live/2025-01-06-kampen-om-groenlands-fremtid?entry=7ec3b128-cf02-49a6-989e-481d4d78076f

Key points is that Greenland is mentioned as an authority and not just as a colony of Denmark.

That the agreement is tied to NATO. Meaning Greenlandic indepence changes nothing as Greenland “must” remain a part of NATO.

USA is responsible for the bases and cleaning up afterwards. Denmark has paid and is still paying for cleaning up after the environmental disasters and untold amounts of shit the Americans left behind when they abandoned bases.

Greenlandic environment and protection of climate is part of the deal. Yep. Donald Trump believes in climate change and has to prevent them on Greenland.

The real winner of this signing is Greenland then Denmark – europa and nato in short succession. Not really sure what America got out of it to be honest.

    19. Thats a pretty good deal. Locks China and Russia out of Greenland, everything else remains pretty much the same.

    20. If it is a win-win then Trump will walk it back soon enough. If Trump think he is not considered the sole winner then he think it is a lose which he can’t have. Just wait a week or two…

Also agreements with the US are not worth the printer ink. It was a Trump government who negotiated USMCA which he then called shameful and now the US has another trade war with Canada…

    21. In two years time Trump will call whoever signed that treaty a moron.

      Just watch.

Over all this is a massive win for Denmark and NATO though.

    22. Tldr, the main changes are:

      • No non-NATO bases allowed.
      • Greenland is named as the actual partner, not just as a vassal of Denmark.
      • Various minor changes to expand allowed US installations to include modern technology.
      • US has to give local Greenlandic preference for commercial contracts (construction, maintenance, service, etc).
      • Adds environmental protections to the land.
      • Adds a more concrete method of dispute resolution.

All in all, a pretty good deal for Greenland.
