Around 900 school gyms in Japan still don’t have air conditioning, a problem that is being increasingly noticed now that they are frequently being used as evacuation shelters during natural disasters in the summer.

There needs to be an active publicity campaign shaming people for bitching every time a school tries to get approval for school improvements like air conditioning, floor tile replacement, office chairs that are ergonomic and aren’t worn to the point you can feel the tension screw on your spine and through your seat.

The issue is most were never built for climate control. The gym at my child’s school is comprised of a tin roof, riveted steel skeleton with particle board walls and single-pane windows. It’d be cheaper to replace rather than renovate.
Gyms are only the tip of the iceberg here. Most of Japan’s built for a milder pre-climate-change environment that’s never returning. But even in some new structures, it appears that initial build cost (bare minimum insulation or leaving it out entirely) is still winning out over quality insulated structures.
Uused to be fine because summer breaks lasted longer than summer heat!
I can’t even imagine going to one of these shelters during a quake. They are so underprepared and seemingly unhealthy. I’d rather risk staying in my place than risk this. Of course, people who outright have no place to stay have no choice. Japan is so, so behind on so much 🙁
As long as it’s not double standards where the principal and teachers rooms are air conditioned but not the classrooms
