Id think they already use disproportionately less healthcare than what their taxes are paying for.

When I first moved to Canada we paid for MSP which is the medical services plan in BC. It was call it a hundred dollars a month (if even) and I can’t for the life of me understand why they would stop charging that. Especially given immigrants have not paid into the tax base growing up, it’s a trivial amount to contribute to our health care system…

Once you move to PR or Citizen it returned to being $0 so the idea is you pay while you are on a temporary status. There was even a 3 month enrollment – cool off period where you were not eligible + when arriving on a work visa; immigration actually check to see do you have insurance for the duration of the visa.

    3. Honestly this fear about temp residents is very stupid and could be solved if temp residents were expected to return to their country for a year to six month after their term between different visa or permits.

The largest “strain” on healthcare spending are repeated visits from people with social issues, homelessness, addictions, poverty, low income. And this provincial government has made it clear that they are too dumb or ideological or both to invest in any type of prevention or upstream programs and have been defunding ANYTHING that has been proven to reduce health care strain via upstream programs that address the social determinants of health. So I find it infuriating that they are desperate to try to find ways to reduce healthcare spending while ignoring the evidence-based elephant in the room. But fury has just been the average experience for any other Albertan like me who isn’t a far right conservative these past years..

    5. Pretty sure the UCP are a far bigger strain on Alberta’s healthcare system than immigrants and it isn’t a close race.  No amount of tax is going to make up for Smith’s mismanagement

    6. Cruelty for the sake of paving the way to private healthcare.

Pretending it will help with a problem they themselves created.

Yup, checks out. The UCP is nothing if not consistent.

    7. We shouldn’t be paying for the healthcare or social services of foreign Nationals. They are just visitors to country and visitors pay for their own healthcare

UCP and Smith are really painting immigrants as the bad guys. Them vs. us. Divide and conquer. The more people are divided, in this case, immigrants, the easier it is for them (UCP and Smith) to gain power.

Let’s not allow Smith to get her way. She is NOT trustworthy. She is abusing her power right now and it can only get worse if people don’t go out to vote against separation.

    9. Honestly I don’t like the idea but at end of the day our public health is in a crisis and we need the cash. If the federal government doesn’t want to dial back immigration to help our Healthcare system catch up this is the outcome.

    10. Is there not data on this so these decisions can be data driven. Are certain classification of temporary residents or immigrants disproportionately using the system or not. Present data. Not “leading” questions on a questionnaire.
