This was back in the pioneering days of robots in combat. My platoon spent some time working as the security detail for an EOD team attached to us. I am the gunner in the lead vehicle — this was one of my squadmates helmet cam.

    1. What was the reception of these bots, besides “better it than me?”

Did they work well? Did they have more problems than they were worth?

    2. IED wins. Wall e is fucked. Sad, but better him than soldiers.

I’m always baffled how footages from 20 years ago seems already like middle age now that AI and drones have taken over the battlefield.

A spoting drone with AI program detection scans the roads, spots IED, another one drops a little charge to set him off. And that’s it..

    3. A few seconds of taking in the moment and then back to business. The guy calling to keep eyes out for a trigger man on the command wire is sharp.

    4. Gosh I miss driving the Talon robot. The grippers on that thing are exceptional at dragging wires and pressure plates out of the ground. They must’ve hit the pressure plate or pulled wires loose and the connected.

    5. I would arrive in Ramdi in 2007 to conduct route clearance operations as a husky driver.

Hell, the first few hours after landing in Ramadi, I got to experience a VBIED.

My grunts were as sad when I blew up my robot as they were when they blew themselves up 😂
