they seem to be virtue signaling "look at us, never stopping, hard working for the belgian people"but to me, it only signals poor planning. Nothing good will be decided at 02:00 am.

Its a puppet show to make it look like they work hard. You can not convince me that you can make sound decisions at 6:30 in the morning buzzed of 2 liters of coffee and no sleep.
Hate the game, not the players. If you have to sell a compromise to the public and opposition, you have to make it look like you fought the hardest compromise ever.
This is pure bad planning. This screams incompetency.
It is like students who is doing an all-nighter, because he did not study at all during the school year.
I much more admire and prefer student who studies regularly and goes to sleep at 10PM before the exam.
This feels like students putting off everything till the last possible moment and only in the last 48 hours can they force themselves to begin.
They are the same people who flex they consistently make overtime and are always online. Even during holidays.

Refuse to use time productively to tackle a challenging budget, postpone until the last minute and exhaust people as a negotiation tactic, then blame the opposition for their lack of respect and humanity. I always thought Ben Weyts was the biggest numpty in that party, but looks like he might have competition.

A journalist gave two good anecdotal examples for Belgian politics.
Years ago there was an agreement by five in the afternoon, but only on the condition that the negotiators would stay locked up till 2 in the morning. To make it easier to convince their supporters they got everything oit of it they could.
Another was in the first Verhofstadt government, they purposely drew out nagitiations. In order to make shure the Green minister was so tired she didn’t realise she agreed to an acord that included a major red line about weapons export to Saudi Arabia.
Can they have one sick day for free, or do they need to queue for a doctor’s note that will give them 5 days?
De bende die beslist heeft dat nachtwerk geen zwaar beroep meer is waardoor er veel mensen niet meer vervroegd in pensioen kunnen gaan zakken zelf in elkaar van eens een paar nachtjes op een stoel te zitten leuteren over puntjes en komma’s.

Everyone knows it’s a terrible way of working and leads to bad decisions.
But it’s not “virtue signaling” or an elaborate show to send the message that they’re hard workers. Especially since everyone who looks at this says it’s nonsense.
There have been many attempts to not work like that. Most of the preliminary work is done by the administration a long time in advance so it would be possible. Except that it doesn’t work in practice because you have three parties who don’t agree on what to do and will use delay tactics to get what they want. And since nothing is agreed until everything is agreed, you can’t even really divide and conquer.
So you start two months in advance stating that you will only work during business hours, but then one party asks for measure X to be budgeted, another for measure Y, but the third party says that they want Z if they are to agree to X or Y, and they all start playing a game of chicken to see which one will be the first to blink. Fast forward and it’s now a week to the deadline and nothing is agreed yet, and the only thing that will make people move is the deadline.
Is dit niet gewoon een tactiek om dan de maatregelen te lekken zodat ze kunnen zien of het volk het wel slikt om ze daarna door te drukken of nog aan te passen? ‘t zijn allemaal zoveel toevalligheden elke keer wanneer ze de bittere pil bij de mensen door willen duwen
