‘Extremely damaging’ anti-foreigner fake news pushes Japan to far-right

Yeah, I already knew that. It’s horrible.

I remember the incident involving a car robbery that caused havoc on a dual carriageway, wrecking cars everywhere and endangering lives. Online, they were saying it was a “foreign tourist who didn’t know Japanese road rules” and “foreigner” as a blanket term so readers would think it was anyone and everyone who wasn’t Japanese. The truth is, the robber who was arrested in the end was a Japanese man, and the result was he injured 11 people and caused 1 fatality. What makes it even more insidious is that none of the people and accounts that reported that it was a foreigner ever issued corrections once the suspect’s identity was broadcast on TV news.

There was another one involving sexual assault; the reports tried to make it sound like it was an American, which made Japanese people think it was either a white or black man. In the end, it was a Japanese man.

Then there was the case involving a Japanese woman who reported an incident to frame it as foreign harassment, only for the police investigation to reveal the entire claim was fabricated. For what reason? I forgot, but the reactions online towards foreigners were nasty and added to the hate even when that Japanese woman was exposed.

And, oh my gosh… I remember that Japanese robber who explicitly pretended to be Chinese/foreigner using broken language while committing his crime, purely because he thought blaming foreigners would throw off the police and feed into public bias to make Japanese look pristine and to avoid shame of his country. But naw, he was Japanese and a fake.

And then there was another story, which I’ve forgotten the exact details of, regarding a local community. The report tried to make it sound like the issue was a group of Indonesians who were causing a public ruckus. In the end, the entire report was a lie, and it turned out to be a huge twist because the group of Indonesians was just talking to each other while walking home from a hard day at work. The person who reported them just didn’t like seeing a group of foreigners together in their community.

And there was the super classic case of Japanese people telling several companies saying, “They are taking ALL OUR JOBS! We have nothing!!” Then the media interviewed the company that hired them, which is Japanese, and the owner said: “We opened the jobs for Japanese first and foremost, but NO Japanese applied, no matter the incentive, including salary raises. All young workers want to do these days is to work in an office job in Tokyo. If we didn’t do something, the entire company would have gone under!”

So yes, I’m not surprised. And all this spiralled out of control approximately 2-3 years ago. Before that, things were kinda quieter. Ultimately, this was all a tactical ploy to gain seats on the political spectrum. It’s completely and utterly fked up, as it’s ultimately media manipulation to create hysteria about something that doesn’t really exist – especially when per capita, foreign residents actually commit crime at lower rates than native Japanese citizens in Japan.

So before Japanese people go and scream at foreigners, they need to hold themselves up to a mirror and fix their own crap first! No one is perfect; there are things on the foreigners’ side that are a legit problem (example: visa evasion) and things that should never be the fault of the foreigner (example: Japanese businesses insanely marking up the price to overcharge all foreigners, which also affects locals), but don’t lie and create more problems than it’s worth via xenophobia. The government has been going through everything completely the wrong way, which will damage Japan and all those who love the country more than grow it, and systemic scapegoating needs to be stamped out before it spirals out of control.

It’s almost like foreign entities want to influence and fund misinformation for their own benefit like preventing population growth or economic growth. Less sailors. Less soldiers. Less competition.
