    1. If we started with politicians and law enforcement on that initiative, it’d never be brought up again and they ought to experience greater scrutiny than your average citizen to begin with as public servants.

    2. Politicians should lead the example and show all their private communication. I would be very interested in Ursula’s messages with Pfizer.

We all know politicians aren’t hypocrites and will lead the example to quell our fears /s

It is fucking INSANE that this is even being discussed. The ENTIRE basis for our democrazy is the right to PRIVATE speech. No king would have fallen, no dictator would ever had been thrown out and no fair elections can ever happen if governments are allowed to search through communication.

      And it WILL be misused.

So I take it that bullshit legalish maneuver the supporters were using to keep getting votes on it even as they lost consistently seems to have worked…

    5. Legalizing the scanning of all our private digital conversations, just as the far right is on the verge of taking power across Europe.

This is going to end well…

It is so serious that I am honestly at a loss for words. This is 1984, nothing less.

    6. All it does is:
      – generate more votes for the extreme right wing.
      – provide tools for mass control as soon as the right wing is in control.

    7. We might not have modern industries and booming economy but at last we have dystopian surveillance.

    8. This is tiring. The EU is the only way we can stay relevant and not be eaten by the big fish in today’s crazy geopolitics, but they keep insisting on this shit. Even with large swathes of the population being seduced by the far-right, or Russian propaganda, or both, still, they keep pushing this shit again and again. And then they will act all Pikachu faced when citizens don’t support the “responsible” parties that spit on them every day and respond to siren calls? They seem to be intent of making it difficult *not* to. They don’t even *care*.

    9. Fuck this shit man. And it’s crazy that politicians are exempt. Not that it’d be better if they weren’t.

    10. >This system is a documented failure: 75% of flagged chats are not actionable, and in Germany, over half of investigations for ‘youth pornography’ target minors themselves, often for consensual sexting

Failure of a (severe) basic rights violation should not be a leading argument to rely on. The rights violation must not happen even if it is successful.

In particular here, a better AI and configuration could easily reduce the false positives.

    11. Highly concerning. I suspect that this is lobbyed by american tech giants, as this is a way of tapping into an infinite stream of human generated data to train their AI models. Whatever is the reason, oligarchs and compromised politicians are not afraid enough of the people

    12. Yogurt_Platinum on

The EU needs to return to being nothing more than an economic union with freedom of movement, we the people deserve better than being bossed around by German aristocrats.

    13. There is no ‘final showdown’ given how these processes work and the lack of real accountability, just the next one.. Until it gets through anyway.

    14. If the EU goes ahead with this won’t they be treating everyone like they are criminals? messages been flagged false positives

    15. I think this is unfortunately for AI training data. What a dystopian hell hole we’re in today. People who are privacy conscious will need to migrate to other services that ensure privacy.

    16. Here’s what gets me. I’ve always been a “serious person” who reads “serious news” written by “serious journalists”.

Why is this not a major major topic in most EU and EEC countries?

Loads of conversations are now digitial. This means chat control is like having a third person in your home.

Imagine if the headline was “The EU listens to all your private communication, including your pillow talk.”

      It’s not far off.

Yet “serious news” is quiet. What is going on??

    17. Who would have thought the EU would get this wrong? Welcome to the federal EU where your privacy does not matter

    18. This is one of the reasons many are skeptical about further EU integration. For our small countries individuals matter and we are heard, for 450 million EU one person is a blip in statistics. Many empires face this problem and it seems that there’s some sort of natural limit of how big is too big.

    19. As long as we can do like President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and delete all the incriminating messages.

      …

      We can’t?

    20. Either dissolve the “EU” or go mask off and drop any pretense of democracy. I’m tired of this shit.

    21. Final trilogue unless the law is rejected

Honestly, we should have a system like switzerland where if there are enough signatures a referendum can be triggered on a piece of legislation, that way we can truly have our voices heard and we dont have to rely on corrupt politicians to safeguard our freedoms.

    22. BAHAHAHAHA

It’s so funny how the EU is claiming to be a democracy while it’s rushing for full 1984!!!

    23. So we are actively seeing mass data breaches all over the place, so the EU is now thinking like: “This is fine, let’s add more data to that pile and make it real interesting”.

      Let’s re-iterate:

      * It’s not a matter of “if” data is leaked, but “when”. All data stored is at risk, even encrypted data. Encryption is basically just a delay to view its contents.
      * This push is based on the assumption that politicians themselves can be exempt, but they can’t. Adding scanning capabilities already weakens platforms, there will be some sort of management layer that is vulnerable to attacks.
      * Meanwhile politicians, judges, journalists, law enforcement and other critical roles to uphold our democracy remain vulnerable, because they all interact with other people that aren’t exempt. There will still be images or chats leaked with damning information that leaves people open to blackmailing risks.

These type of mass surveillance laws are amongst the worst ideas and make the EU vulnerable, not stronger.

    24. Gonna be fun working in an industry that enshrines confidentiality. Can’t wait for the major data breaches that will result from this piece of shit legislation.

    25. QuickCookieQuestion on

By the way, it’s never the “final” regulation, there will always be a new fabricated scandal to push new restrictive measures. Now keep defending your “integration” and your “federalization” of this historical mistake the EU is.

    26. I keep being assured by people here that the EU are “the good guys”, and then they pull Orwellian shit like this.

    27. GeneralCommand4459 on

A couple of times in the not so distant past Europeans were subject to mass surveillance and its shocking outcomes. How does anyone want to go back to that?

    28. This is so disturbing, frightening, anti democracy that we should all be in the streets over it. What will it take? Literally what will it take until the people have had enough?

    29. So is EU going to return Google’s money over the right to be forgotten stuff. And do Americans get to fly a helicopter with a giant camera pointed at German embassies like under Bush?

    30. I thought this was just a thing in my dystopian island, had no idea the EU is looking at this as well. As they talking about implementing image scanning as well, or is that still just being implemented here in Airstrip One?

    31. i produced a big piece on what exactly is chat control 1.0, the future of private comms in europe, and the egregious conditions this entire saga has existed under.

i tried as much as i can to take a journalistic, neutral approach to this, arguing for both sides of the table.

the bottom line: in an open democracy, we expect to be able to vote for or against mass scanning where there is a full room of member representatives — not under ridiculous “second reading” rulings that count empty seats as a vote lol

would love feedback on this piece. i wanted to make this as i realized there weren’t too many good long-form pieces on youtube around this topic!

    32. The eu needs to be heavily reformed, because this is getting out of control, but then again this is what they always wanted, to control the people without any opposittion. If it werent for the eu parliament they would have passed this long ago but with Metsola at the helm she will make this pass like she did back in july. These people deserve to be incarcerated and it should start with the person who first propesed this

    33. IamFondOfHugeBoobies on

And barely anyone is aware because everyone in Europe is too busy caring about American politics, Israel/Palestine to give two shits what’s happening to themselves.

Talk about fucking bread and circus Jesus.
