    1. Argentina has threatened to take Britain to an international court if work on a major offshore oil project in the Falkland Islands is not halted within two weeks.

Javier Milei, the Argentine president, warned that his government would request an emergency order from the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea to freeze development of the Sea Lion oilfield in the North Falkland Basin.

The ultimatum marks a sharp escalation in the dispute over the South Atlantic archipelago, with Buenos Aires accusing the UK of “plundering” natural resources and causing “irreversible and irreparable” harm to its sovereignty claims.

Mr Milei’s stance has been emboldened by Donald Trump, the US president, who last month said for the first time that he was reviewing Washington’s position on Britain’s sovereignty over the islands.

At the heart of the standoff are vast energy reserves lying 136 miles north of the islands. Geological surveys suggest the basin contains up to 1.7 billion barrels of oil, a reserve larger than anything remaining in British North Sea waters.

    2. He is learning!

He’s learned from Trump that when you don’t have a clue what you are going to do,and have no way out, give a 2 week deadline and pray everyone forgets.

I genuinely reckon he’d have done this bollocks sooner had we won in the WC semis. It’s all just optics and distractions from his failing economic policy. I distinctly remember seeing so many posts about how things had to get worse for Argentinians before they got better. They reality seems to be that they’re still getting worse and that the propaganda machine itself is running out of money.

Or what? Will they bleed all over the Falklands? The only way, I reckon, they can pull this off is with the US help in some form.

Why is this a sharp escalation? If there is a dispute, taking matters to a competent court is the proper way to resolve it. Much better than violent or even military language, threats or abuse of domestic courts as we have also seen in the past.

    6. That would be welcome. The UK government consistently tried to get the issue before the International Court of Justice, until persistent refusals to engage by the Argentine government lead to the view that it was pointless to keep trying some time in the 60s.

If Argentina is labouring under the impression that the UK thinks that its claim is weak and that this threat will cause the Government lost sleep they’re deeply mistaken here; the reality is that that they have no legal or moral claim to the islands whatever. It is an issue kept alive not by the legal aspect but by its utility to nationalist governments to throw sand in the eyes of its own citizenry at times of hardship in Argentina. Only the islanders – who’ve peacefully lived there for close to two centuries – have the right to the place, and they have firmly chosen to associate with Britain.

I look forward to Argentina finally considering the matter to be settled once the court rules against them.

Reminder that the UK has had sovereignty over the Falklands longer than Argentina has been a coubtry

    8. Once upon a time they could launch an invasion, how the ‘meaty’ have fallen.

I call them meaty not mighty because of their beef exports.

Well that’s a little less dramatic than the headline first implies.

    10. Could Britain not work with Argentina and undercut whatever games Trump is playing?
I’m not an expert on this topic.
