Moien! I started this recurring community event in Luxembourg city where we do free play sessions to get the kids outside and promote playing without screens, criativity, exercise and all that (you can see our IG here).
Instead of toys or traditional playground stuff we use recycled materials like cardboard boxes, old electronics, paint, and random objects. The idea is to get the kids creating their own play scenarios, building things, painting them, etc. It’s been great so far, we started in the summer and have been doing sessions every two weeks.
But it’s a volunteer-based project (and we don’t charge anything, it’s free to attend), so that means that we don’t really have funds to buy things. I pay out of pocket for some stuff, like paint, chalk and a Flex van every time to transport the equipment from my house to the park. Everything else is either donated or found on Hoplr or the recyling center.
With that being said there’s a few things I haven’t managed to find and would make great play objects, mainly:
- Transport crates (or milk crates I think they’re called?)
- Thick cardboard pipes
- Large wooden spools, the kind for electric cables.
- Car tires. We already have a couple, but the kids love them and it’d be great to have more.
Does anyone have some of these things lying around, or could point me in the direction of where I could obtain some? Either companies or services that might be able to donate them to us. Any tip is appreciated.
And in case you have other things that could be good to play, we’d be happy to take them! Anything from large cardboard boxes, old laptops or calculators, bedsheets, paintbrushes, shovels etc. We can come to you.
Thanks for reading!

Go to a recycling center. They usually have boxes with stuff one can take.
Hi, I work part-time at a recycling center near Remich. I can get you most of these things. We’ve got quite a few tires and I think I saw a big cable spool lying around too.
