I’m glad they’re warning us, but the last time we got this it ended up just being a bit of rain in my area, and it was like, "that’s it?" Thanks for the warning, I guess lol!
Well it’s weather. **Φύλαγε τα ρούχα σου, να ’χεις τα μισά**

our brain is wired to “getting used” of a frequent message that results to “nothing”. When there is a real emergency, the CY Alert will just invalidate itself because our brains associated it with a non-threat. I strongly disagree with the use of this system for anything other than real emergency. Just my 2 cents

According to most forecasts, this time it’s going to be really bad, especially in the west. It seems one of those usual low-pressure things that turn north towards Antaliya after passing Greece, this time is going to be big enough to catch Cyprus as well with a strong front of pouring rain, thunderstorms and hail.
I don’t know about anything beyond Troodos, Nicosia included, but in Paphos I expect things to get crazy. So I’m working from home today, thank you very much.

Growing up in the 90s, we’d get 3-4 days of constant downpour, thunder, and wind, and it barely made the news. Now a little rain and it’s total panic 🤣

They cannot predict the weather with 100% accuracy, not even close to that. They simply warn you when there is an increased probability of dangerous weather conditions.

Last time we got it it was a yellow warning about localized storm which is why in your area it didnt rain that much while in a different one it did. Now its an orange warning for a big big thunderstorm going through almost all of cyrpus so be ready to get hit by a large amount of rain or maybe also a bunch of lightning.

Oh btw something I gotta mention cuz I see a bunch of fuss going on here about it
Yellow warning: ignore that it aint worth stressing about
Orange warning: stay inside for a couple hours take a nap
Red warning: Run. Drive. Fly to a different country.

I got this earlier today with a note at the bottom asking if I wanted to opt out of getting them. Just saying

On my last trip, we went to the philliphines during rainy season, got a local sim and these alerts were coming litrally every 15-30 mins. Your phone was constantly getting these alerts, day time, evening, midnight. Had to silent my phone cause thing was vibrating at 3am for some flooding in some place. Havent seen one of these since i came back and it only brought back memories

I just came home from the highway from Nicosia-Limassol. It was 10 minutes of almost zero visibility due to the extremely heavy rain. I received the warning 10 minutes after I went through all that XD

FYI : it rained heavily in my area for like 10 minutes at around 5pm and stopped. Typical Cypriot weather, nothing too weird.

It’s our government testing the new system. The thing is, they have no fucking clue how to properly classify environmental or weather hazards and to know when to actually initiate a national weather alert.
