If he’d said ‘Jews are out-breeding us and will replace us’, we’d all know what that is. Why is it acceptable to say it about Muslims?

Also, Catholics have enormous families and enforce teenage pregnancy through reproductive ignorance, there are wacky Christian sects who literally don’t even allow birth control. But they’re not scary – because they’re white.

Sounds like the fragile whining of someone whose ‘British values’ have been revealed to be a thinly-veiled collection of 1950s bigotries that they can’t persuade anyone to hang onto any more.

Religious fundamentalists are having more children than others, and it has an impact on society and élections, something they’re very keen on. How is that even remotely controversial?

By the way this is true in Israel too, where Jewish fundamentalists now malke or break governments.

PS having said that his maths and thinking are completely off. The fact that a man married several wives has little impact on population growth. It’s the number of children per woman that counts.

We’re a very stupid country in many ways. This is the Great Replacement conspiracy said in a flowery turn of phrase, and because of that language people will see it being a more respectable, civilised, logical point despite it being just as dumb as when it’s yelled by a drunk Tommy Robinson on a street corner.

I think there’s important context missing here. I’ve read the full quote in the article but nobody seems to have asked the guy exactly what he meant because there’s some uncertainty behind the motivation from what I can see.

For example, if the rationale is simply a fear of change and that’s as deep as it goes, then I can see how that could be seen as an irrational phobia. If the rationale is something like we can demonstrate that there’s a fundamental shared reality and certain ideas that are demonstrably in conflict with what are problematic and should be avoided of which Islam and many other religions can objectively be categorised as such, then I would conclude that it is a completely rational fear. How can diverging from what we can demonstrate to be true be anything but a problem that needs correcting? Do you want to live in a world based on lies, or one based on objective and empirical truth? It’s like asking if it’s better to make policy based on data and facts, or make policy based on guesses. Guessing can be right some of the time but if you want to maximise your probabilities of successful outcomes, you need a methodology based on empiricism and that means stamping out stupid shit like Islam, Christianity and a number of other demonstrably problematic world views that have tenets and dogma that are not at all empirical.
