Whoever came up with that false information to stir things up *really* struck gold yesterday.
It was in every group chat, local facebook group and workplace within an hour or so, before the police even put out a statement about him, and not a single person checked to see if it was from any sort of reliable source or if the information might have been in the slightest bit correct.
The fact most people who read that and spread it will not even have taken notice of the fact it ended up being a total fabrication is really bleak. Useful idiots everywhere.

Perverting the course of justice, or attempting to, has a maximum sentence of life in prison…
Obviously that would be a bit OTT, but I can see them being questioned at least.

somehow i don’t think this correction really matters.

Yeah I was scrolling Twitter yesterday and it was mental the number of folk jumping on the fake news. I reckon some people share it knowing it’s fake, because it doesn’t matter, it will be forgotten about in a week, they won’t face consequences. The rest are just gullible.

This should really be used as a case study in fake news it happened so quickly from nowhere. A website no one has ever heard of, that was only created a year ago, cutting a story out of whole cloth. Spread across the internet within a couple of hours. Got multiplied by AI news sites rewriting the story and quoting them. Then boosted more by social media accounts with hundreds of thousands of followers. And then repeated down the food chain by regular people, many of whom saying things like “I don’t know how true it is but I read on social media….”
Someone with the technical know-how should try and find out who is operating that website, there’s good odds it’s the Kremlin.

I mean this as nicely as possible, but the moderation of this sub on that news article was awful. The number of racists and idiots saying things like, “Well, we all know what the problem is but we can’t talk about it” – all should be deported. Not to Rwanda, because there are other humans there. But maybe to South Georgia (the British Island, not part of the American state or Caucasian country)

Ooh! It would be beyond GLORIOUS if Looser Fox got sued again! He’s not only an asshole but a dangerous one. I really hope he gets what’s coming to him.

It’s always in the first thing that is said – fake or otherwise – that spreads, the corrections rarely get airtime. Who remembers the 30 beheaded babies lie? There are still billions of people who think it was true despite widespread analysis to show it was completely made-up.

Well duh. They’re not exactly reknowned for correctly using their one brain cell.
Given changes in the law at trying to name them, especially since Larry Fox presents himself as a journalist, it would be a shame if he was to land himself in court again.
If he had got the name right, since the suspect is under 18, that would be contempt of court would it not? Not to mention the risk of introducing prejudice into what is an active investigation and trial (if charged).
Or being sued for defamation. Wouldn’t be the first time.

Lmao they’re no better than some of the people in this sub over the last few days. It’s disgraceful that when things like this happen people are rushing to discern what race they are or where they’ve come from.

I remember when the Brianna Ghey murder story first broke and Twitter was alive with speculation that someone from a nearby migrant hotel did it. It quickly became fact for a section of the internet right that a refugee murdered a white girl (they didn’t realise she was trans, so they were extra incensed).
Yesterday they were doing it again. They had some random Muslim sounding name and were insisting it was the attacker.

Similar thing happened in Australia several months ago with a stabbing in Sydney. Twitter blew up about a local uni student who looked vaguely similar and one of the major news stations reported him as the perpetrator. Obviously it wasn’t him and they were facing legal issues shortly after.
