So every single one of these protesters got jailed, but the guy that sent Huw Edwards child porn got a suspended sentence?

    2. Never thought I would be living in a society that jails (peaceful) protestors.

      > Francesca Cociani, from Hodge Jones & Allen – who represents Delap, Bell, Johnson, and Higginson, said: “Today’s decision to imprison peaceful protesters is a grave injustice and does not align with the UK’s professed values.

I think jailing protestors is exactly UK’s professed values, imo.

As someone doing a degree specialised in energy and resources, I really don’t like these Just Stop Oil activists.

First of all their form of activism does them no favours, bad publicity may get them noticed but it doesn’t make the general public like them and actually just turns people away from their cause.

On top of that ‘just stopping oil’ is a stupid idea. We absolutely need to stop burning oil, it’s an inefficient waste of a valuable resource that is doing serious damage to our climate and health, but oil itself is a resource that we can use just like any metal or rock resource. Oil is used in fertilisers and plastics, it’s invaluable to the agricultural and medical industries. What we need to be asking for is the more responsible use of oil, we need to be protesting combustion of oil, not oil itself.

All that to say I don’t really have any sympathy for the people who have been arrested.

Edit: and if these people actually want to make a significant difference they should take the route that me and many people on my degree have taken by actually putting themselves in an industry that will make a difference, like nuclear or renewables or even the oil industry that is slowly but surely making progress and needs fresh employees to help drive the change, instead of sitting in the middle of roads and spraying paint on buildings.

This is insanity. Our jails are full. Some sexual offenders, violent offenders get less jail time than peaceful protestors. Some of them are being let out right now!! Surely the priority has to be locking violent and sexual criminals, rather than peaceful protest organisers?

No sympathy for them , sorry but protesting on a live main motorway is utter stupidity. They are lucky to be in jail & not dead – or in jail for longer sentences due to their actions causing deaths .

Something I’m a little confused by in regards to this, is how did these people get smaller sentences for actual disruption on the M25 versus the just stop oil activists who conspired to cause disruption on either the M25 or another motorway

So you can murder someone and don’t get jailed but this? I hate these idiots because all their protests do is piss people off and get people pissed at them. Not their cause. But you can kill someone or rob someone etc… and not get jailed.

And they are releasing thousands to make room.

    8. >All the defendants, who pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to causing a public nuisance, received terms of between one year eight months and two years

Same sentence as the slasher actor got, except assault and GBH sentence was suspended.

      Utterly bizarre.

    9. Blocking the average person isn’t going to win them any new supporters, especially if they’re now late for work, school, etc

Good, give em longer, bunch of fucking idiots, the world is centuries away from not using oil and let’s be honest, the average Joe doesn’t give a fuck about the environment.

so these guys are going to prison but the guy who mutilated his gfs face by slashing it w a knife is free bc there’s ‘not enough space’?
