Looks like a fair chunk is going into R&D of new or existing kit and infrastructure.

Unpopular opinion but I still think our budget needs increased to at least 3-5% considering the state of our armed forces.
We keep getting told that we must prepare for war, that our army isn’t strong enough, etc. So why the hell is our budget only 2.3%??? How are you going to fix a crisis without doing anything different?
It looks like we’re on the brink of war, but it looks like our government doesn’t give a doss.

Having seen it first hand. A lot gets wasted on incredibly inefficient procurement strategies.

It goes on high tech gear and salaries.
Ships and planes are exlensive to buy and maintain
The main issue we face is we need more soldiers and longer range artillery.

As someone that’s been in the machine.
A lot of money is wasted on top brass that’s not needed. A lot of old guys in management roles that have no one to manage.
Then there’s the procurement process, instead of buying off the shelf or what other countries have developed, we instead half arse our own version and spend far too much on it.
Then there’s the constant rotation on projects, so many different managers of projects all asking for their own input. So we end up with a something like Ajax, which is has gone from a recon vehicle to a jack of all trades master of fuck all.

Salaries and pensions. People always cost more than ‘things’.

Air defense is the area we should aim to excel at.
Actually invading Britain would be a right pain in the arse for the land armies of Eurasia, but missiles and jets could still destroy the country.
If we can shoot those down reliably and in quantity, then the offensive threat of Trident becomes much more severe: not only will we fire back, but you might not succeed in hitting us with your first strike.
I had hoped we were beyond this bollocks as a world, but we clearly aren’t, so we might as well be good at it.

A silly amount is wasted, upgrade programs that get scrapped when they are nearly finished, kit bought and then binned before it’s used etc etc. defence procurement needs a shake up

So this is the country that is supposed to have the best special forces (SAS) because uhh uhhhhm they’re British! Inb4 talks about training being harder (if harder training produced better soldiers, everyone would do it also), or some story about WWII.
