Letting chip fabs all move to the far east was such a catastrophic national security failure, if china goes to war with taiwan we’re fucked

This is so long overdue. Its shameful that we are still heavily relying on overseas talent to fill skills gaps we have had years to fill.

It’s gotten out of hand now that Web Developer jobs are frequently being advertised at minimum wage with no WFH provision.
The only people with that skill-set accepting those roles under such bad terms are Indian visa workers being paid 20% below the standard wage under the bonkers ‘skills shortage’ rules.
Who else is spending thousands of hours learning these skills for min wage?

As a tech, many “tech” staff out there are woefully inept.

That’s a wonderful way to drive more jobs off shore.

We need to be expanding apprenticeships. Large companies are charged a levie, this could be used to fund in-house training for existing staff. I also have a feeling that it has been cheaper to look elsewhere. I am not against immigration, we just need to ensure people are offered training and make it easier to change careers.

Good luck lol
Senior management demand we pull the “tier 2 visa” ripcord for every vacancy. Get the seat filled as fast possible, for as low a salary as possible.
Refuse to entertain graduates, apprentices, or training spend on existing hires *whilst they wheel their flight cases out of the office for yet another business class jolly to the New York office*
What sucks for the folks we hire, is they uproot their lives to come to the UK. All starry-eyed, optimistic, and quickly realise how shit their salaries are – when rent and CoL consumes almost all of it.

Anyone used Freelancer? Get small and medium contracts IT based from all over the world, for cheaper than the UK.

Our tech and engineering education is pretty appalling in this country. People who put in a decent amount of effort in their own projects are highly valued and do well, but you can’t expect to build a successful industry on a larger scale if domestic educational curriculum isn’t putting a far greater number of people into the position to be able to do that. A prerequisite for this includes making the teaching positions for these jobs a desirable career in terms of pay and working conditions, why would any good software engineer even remotely consider working in a British comprehensive school?

Can’t imagine that will go down well with those negotiating post Brexit trade deals with India et al

Wrong move. This is absolutely the wrong visa to curb.

Learn SAP Commerce (formerly Hybris). There’s about 4 of us in the whole country who know it, everyone else is in India or Brazil.

Why the fuck would anyone work here anyway. Pay here for engineering jobs of half that of the US.

It makes sense to curb hiring overseas folks for roles easily filled by a UK resident.

Top companies like Meta, Google, Amazon, Apple, Anthropic, HFT’s, etc. will always spend money on foreign workers if they have the skills. Not to pay less but to get people with better skills

Just make minimum salary to get a visa, only above 60K

I’ve worked in mechanical, electrical, civil and process engineering all my working life (circa 36 years).
There is an acute shortage of all of these disciplines, we are investigating heavily in apprentices and graduates but it’s still extremely hard to fill vacancies
I would estimate around 10% of our engineers are recruiting from outside of the UK and we offshore even more design to India due to the shortages
Unfortunately engineering is undervalued in the UK which also results in engineers we train for years leaving the UK for better opportunities, pay and conditions
When I started as an M&E apprentice I still remember the union rep telling me there would be an engineering skills shortage in the coming decades and I’d never be out of work, he was not wrong
