  1. Submission statement: I’m the journalist who reported this story/obtained the documents, so I hope it is okay to post. I think it’s another interesting example of how this creeping surveillance technology is being operationalised. I was only able to get these docs because the train station is publicly owned – presumably it has already been widely deployed in the private sector, in shopping malls and airports. And yet it is hugely capable, and we’re all virtually unaware of just how much more sophisticated CCTV has become.

    I’ve seen H!kVision cameras in South Asia aimed at shops and homes, provide capabilities as advanced as facial recognition(no, haven’t tested it myself how good it is), at worryingly cheap prices.

    Coupled with the absolute lack of regulation or enforcement, this region seems to be a privacy nightmare.
