    Ruling Party Seeks Constitutional Majority to Ban Opposition, “Gay Propaganda,” Two Other Cryptic Reasons


    First you arrest the kooky former prime minister and hold him without trial for years. "Everyone will say, "Well he probably did something to deserve it. It doesn’t affect me."

    Then you ban protests and say it’s about the gays. Almost everyone will say, "I am not gay. It won’t affect me."

    Then you shut down the civil society organizations and election monitors and say it’s about foreign influence. The majority of the people will say, "I don’t work for any of these organizations. It shouldn’t really affect me."

    Then you ban almost all opposition parties right before the election and say it’s about a global conspiracy and a war that happened 16 years ago. And still most people will say, "Well I didn’t really like most of them anyway, so I guess it doesn’t matter."

    Oh, and you also build a 3 meter high wall around the election commission building. And the people will say, "I have a little money, a little food, and there is electricity and peace, so maybe we didn’t need democracy or rights after all."

      Jesus Christ. I’m not Georgian but this last paragraph hits home so hard. 🙁 I know so many barriers limit what people can do, but GD is a good example of good people not standing up for themselves and being fucked over. And it’s fucking horrible to see.

      I’m hoping Russia will lose the Ukraine war so badly that no bribe money is left for GD goons and a new, young party feels confident to rise from the shitshow of political corruption to lead the people to prosperity.

      But what’s the chances of that? :/
