    1. >An 18-year-old Briton has been sentenced to a year in prison in Dubai after a “holiday romance” with a girl who was 17 at the time.

      >Marcus, from Tottenham, North London, had been enjoying a holiday with his parents when he met a fellow Brit at the same hotel. A holiday fling sparked and the pair spent time together until the girl, also from London, flew back to Britain.

      >In Dubai, if an adult has a sexual relationship with a person under 18, they can be prosecuted for having a sexual relationship with a minor. The relationship would be legal in the UK.

    2. Wow. This is terrible. How did the authorities find out? Assume the girl didnt raise a complaint? But, as example, i know UK consent laws are 16, but as some of USA is 17/18, couldnt the same thing happen there as example? Assume nationality of “victim” doesnt come into it???

    3. The girls mother needs to be outed and publicly shamed, she knew fully well the repercussions of her reporting but she did it anyways.

People want to complain about Dubai but everyone knows the strict laws it’s the mother of the girl we need to focus on!
She flew back home and then reported this.

Tactical move, to avoid herself being questioned by the authorities!!

-Also both were consensual teens and the relationship would be legal in the UK in which no R*** has been mentioned –

Any jail time is bad but I’d heard he could have faced up to 10, I’m glad that he didn’t get that long, as shit as 1 year is, he won’t lose his entire young adulthood and I genuinely think there will be a large amount of people willing to help this guy out when he’s able to come home.

UK should still fight this tooth and nail but if this is how it is, it could be so much worse

Feel for the lad, really unfair and what a vindictive mother of the 17 yo involved. I know people will say be aware of laws in other countries but there being no discretion when the two involved are less than a year apart in age is mad.

I do wonder if a local would’ve been dealt with in the same way. I’m sure there is a level of racism going on here, state and/or mother.

Any idea of the background of the 17yo? That might give some clues in this.

    7. Hmm what’s that thing ppl say on here?

Respect the laws of the country you’re in? Something like that?

End of the day you’re in Dubai you know they got incredibly strict laws and shes not 18 either. If he wanted to see her wait till you both get back to London.

Don’t go to UAE and break their laws. That’s like playing with fire and crying you got burnt. Even if the fire is small

    9. Although I fully understand and suppoort folk being punished for breaking the laws overseas, I want to see this girls mum named and shamed and dragged over hot coals for ruining this lads life

    10. A lot of understandable outrage at a harsh punishment and the seeming vindictive behaviour from the girls mother reporting this when back in Britain.

I do think that collectively, we would take a very dim view to “it’s legal in my country” being a defence for any holidaymakers who commit crimes in the UK.

This should be a warning to people to research local laws before they go on holiday, and maybe avoid even going to countries with laws you might break.

I lost my virginity in Turkey at 17 to a 23 year old. Age of consent over there is 18, but I didn’t know this until years later because at the time, all I knew was I was over the age of consent in my own country and that was all that mattered. This is fucked up and I really feel for the lad. What a spiteful human being the girl’s mother is.

    12. If someone from Colombia where the age of consent is 14 came over here and shagged someone under 16, I’d like to think we’d prosecute them too.

    13. People need to realise that there are parents out there who take this shit hella serious. Just cos there’s such thing as “casual sex” in your culture doesn’t mean there is in others. This guy ended up fucking with the wrong girl while also not being wary of the law around him. Worst case scenario he could have waited a week and met her when they were both back in London

    14. That evil mother, how could she do this to another child. He was there on holiday, he did nothing wrong, and now he has to spend a year in a foreign prison….all because some Karen got upset. He will be traumatised for life.

I hope we find out who she is….she deserves to be shamed for what she’s done.

This is what happens when you 1 be too overprotective of your daughter and 2 raise your son to be a dumbass

    16. Don’t understand the fascination with Dubai as a holiday destination. I get the allure of many money to go work there temporarily.

Sportswashing has been such a masterstroke in terms of making it seem like it’s not a morally regressive shit hole.

    17. We’ve all dealt with mother’s like this, and I personally don’t know how this one can even sleep at night but she’s likely proud of herself. Mothers like this destroy relationships for their own ego, and possessiveness of their own daughters — even if this was a fling. Shameful

I’m a Brit living in Dubai. All these comments hating Dubai. It’s pretty simple don’t go to countries and brake their laws. That’s it lol..It’s not rocket science. We expect people to abide by our laws when people visit the UK.

    19. Dubai is racist that is why this happened. There’s plenty of stories of black people in Dubai getting extremely harsh punishments fro minor things. I’m sure someone got dont for opium import when it was a poppy seed from a bagel.

Despicable and vindictive thing done by that mother. She should be named and shamed, she knew exactly the repercussions this would have. Horrible horrible person
