You can prefer something but also understand that it does not work at scale and that there are better systems already in use..

I am aware that by (re-)posting this at a time when my fellow Brits are (hopefully) still asleep that I’m inviting a negative response from the ‘totally-British-honest-guv’ types who are usually around on /r/UK at this time (i.e. pre-5am UK time)

Capitalism has had its day. It just creates a growing section of society that has to be exploited and remain poor. The problem is that no one country knows how to transition away from it without losing its global standing, at least in the short term. I am, however, glad we’ve chosen Capitalism+Governmental redistribution of wealth, rather than doubling down on capitalism like the US has.

They also, according to the same poll, prefer liberalism to Socialism.

Since liberalism is a form of capitalist ideology, it seems like they prefer the *term* socialism. If you add up the various capitalist groups that aren’t called capitalist, the number is probably like 60% capitalist (there will be considerable overlap between people).

That’s nice, but we’re not ready for real socialism yet, capitalism is a bunch of stepping stones needed to make it happen, first we need to fix capitalism to make it work for us so the stairs send us upwards rather than downwards like it does now.
Frankly anyone crying for full socialism at this point in society is at worst an idiot, at best an idealist.
The best we can do right now and not have a completely failed society is to have a half and half situation where public services (*all* utilities, transport, healthcare etc) are nationalised and funded through capitalism, while meanwhile allowing capitalism to supply us with the resources and tech to improve and progress as a society until everything can be fully automated to ensure the true kind of equality we need to make socialism work in anyway.

For capitalism to continue to work how it has in years past there need to be a way to break up the top of the pyramid systems and the inequality between 0.5%-0.1% of wealth.
There is no need for someone to have tens to hundreds of billions, especially in a country with a socialised health care system.
I feel like we’re paying a game of monopoly where it’s impossible to get anywhere near the player who has accumulated all properties, train stations and facilities because everytime you move a square you owe more money than you physically have.

Socialism is fine, just need to join EU again to fund the said Socialism.

The fact that a non negligible amount of Brits are actualy admitting they would like socialism speaks volumes of how terrible of a job the education system has done. Socialism has never worked because it cannot work.

British people have never lived in socialism so I don’t see how they can like it lol .
They have read about it. But no one has experienced it.
I think it’s just sample bias in the survey

Well yeah. The majority of Brits are indeed uneducated with lacklustre critical thinking abilities. Hardly news.
