I wonder what retaliatory measures China might take. They have already banned Google and other Western social media platforms, so what equivalent measures could be implemented, if any? Perhaps they could simply toughen bureaucracy for Western companies in China.

US lawmakers are urging Google and Apple to remove TikTok from their app stores before a January 19 deadline. This comes after President Biden signed a law requiring TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, to sell the app or face a US ban. The lawmakers sent letters to tech leaders urging them to comply with the law, which prevents foreign-controlled apps like TikTok from being distributed or updated in the US unless they divest.

Prepare? What they need to prepare. Sounds like few clicks away.

I hate TikTok for many reasons and think this is for the best, but I also worry other apps might be labeled as “national security” threats and banned as well when they clearly aren’t.

Don’t people make $ off this app?
So much for “free speech”.

Google and Meta already have their TikTok copies in place and have been for a while. The competition is being banned by the government that is [checks notes] being run by the Silicon Valley Tech Bros. Hurrah for the dystopia!

Good riddance! Hopefully this starts a new era of holding social media accountable. Yes even American ones like Facebook and Twitter.
All of these companies should go away imo. Ban them all. Even ban reddit. All of them have to go.

Hell yeah!! Get that shit outta here. It saddens me to see kids that can’t walk or talk using social media. Instead of learning about the environment they live in.

What’s stopping people from just sideloading the app on their phone and using the website? If they’re not going to be based in the US, can US laws touch them?

Over my dead body!
I’ll gladly help anyone side load TikTok.

Honestly, while I’m not a user of Tik Tok, I’m actually considering doing what I can just to tell congress, their stooges, and their fat cats who are likely going to line up to buy it…to flock off.
This sets a bad precedent based off pure hypocrisy.

So I thought tik toc just had to divest and set up a us company? Is this not the plan?

Don’t imagine they’d need to tell Google, Google bought the ban in the first place
