      If you want a dog, please please consider a retired greyhound. They’re wonderful, loving, lazy couch potatoes. They hardly need walking. They tend to be very independent and low-maintenance, more like cats than dogs. All they want is a comfy sofa and someone to love them after they have been exploited by a disgusting industry.

      Anyone who’s met a traumatised ex-racing greyhound would not be in favour of continuing this “sport”.

      Fuck dog racing! And fuck anyone who bets on them.

      My childhood dog was an ex-racer, our neighbours brother owned her and was going to put her down because she had sustained an injury that made her slow.. she was healthy, just not as fast as he wanted her to be. My dad – who is usually a massive dickhead – told him we’d have her.

      Best dog in the world, lazy and greedy but so clever and loving. Scared of cats too, so even without the injury I don’t think she was cut out for racing. Her death hit so hard, when she was sick. I’d just sit in her bed with her stroking her for hours. She was a massive comfort in some really shitty childhood moments.

      I hope afterlife is real so I can be with her.

      I’ve fostered and adopted many greys down the years and they make great companions. Some of them are traumatised from their time in kennels and need a lot of love and patience. This ‘sport’ is cruel and needs banning

      free the hounds!!!! I have my second and third one of these gorgeous dogs and am convinced that this industry needs to stop and stop soon.
      Right when I was adopting my two, there was a story of a trainer being told to get out of the industry and she ended up relinquishing her dogs at short notice to various rescues in south England. This trainer had SIXTY dogs, and some of them came into rescue in what looked like awful condition. Just heartbreaking.

      I have 2 retired racers dozing next to me now. Lovely, placid, gentle dogs – I can’t imagine anyone wanting to hurt them.

      New Zealand recently passed a ban on Greyhound racing, alongside an immediate law that imposed fines on dog owners for killing off dogs in advance of the ban. Hopefully they follow suit here, it’s a pathetic sport.

      This “sport” has been criminalised or decommissioned in all but one US state, a ban has been announced in New Zealand, and one territory of Australia has also banned it so far.

      I think most people take the vegan position on this issue, other than the bookies and trainers.

      So happy to see all the comments calling for an end to this cruelty. Just remember, horse racing is every bit as awful.
