>The issue of foreign interference through donations came to the fore amid reports Elon Musk had been considering giving Reform $100 million before he fell out with Nigel Farage
I feel that Labour needs to go beyond just restricting foreign funding and restrict all large donations. They’ve struggled for decades on this, being routinely out-fundraised by the Tories and now Reform by a factor of 3 to 1 or worse. They will never be the first choice for millionaires and billionaires, no matter how business-friendly they are.

Call me crazy but I think if all votes are meant to be equal, then all political donations should be too. Having billionaires fund political parties goes in the face of that.

Sooner the better.
The likes of Phony Stark can transfer over tens of millions in short notice to keep in store for the next election, in advance of any new law.

The easy way around all of this is state funding of political parties and no other funding at all.
Stop individuals accepting gifts, money and all the rest of it – automatic deselection as a prospective candidate or removed as an MP and lose all subsequent benefits including the pension.
Anyone who thinks for one moment that an MP accepting fancy dinners and holidays and funding from, say, a tobacco company isn’t being paid to lobby for them needs to give their head a wobble.

Forget Elon and Reform for a second, more transparency in the donations towards parties is a thing I think all of us can agree on.
Even if it is baby steps forward to start with, anything in this direction is a good thing for politics in the UK.
And I do also agree with what she said about the disconnect between politicians, politics, and the general public, their needs to be more transparency going forward to build that trust up, this can be said about every party in the UK at the moment.

No, not before, now, it’s clear that there is a rising issue that needs action today

It’s like trying to win the lottery while wearing a blindfold how about some fair play in the realm of party funding?

Way overdue. Let’s hope they also work on electoral interference on social media. Laws were put in place for TV 70 years ago and they look ridiculously antiquated in the new world. Pointless regulating party political broadcasts when Russia spends 500 million on bots and synthetic facebook groups. Even ignoring the democratic danger of it all, it’s ruined the internet. Can’t log onto any site without getting furious anymore and it’s damaging society

I am amazed this move comes so late.
So let’s be clear: if another foreign man/organisation with wealth who is far more discreet yet still going to interfere UK politics was always allowed to make this donation/interference until this point.
Then if we go back to UK modern history, how many decisions are truly UK original or a result of people’s need, i.e. based on democratic system and mechanism, instead of big money campaign/white glove bills from someone, USA say?

I’d rather freebies from corporate or individuals was banned. Lobbying curtailed. It’s only news because of Musk. And it isn’t hidden like Starmer’s suits and spectacles, Siddiq’s receiving a free house amid corruption (alleged) scandal. And similar for all MP’s

I got a rule for this, if your not a British citizen you cannot donate any money to a political party and you cannot donate money that has been gifted to you by another person or group.

You need to bring it in ASAP, not before next election. It may be too late by then.

I say ban all funding, including that from trade unions.

Everything was ok prior to Reform coming onto the scene. The top two parties never had an issue with where donations were coming from.
Reason Labour and it’s supporters are in tears over this is because the grown ups want to be as far away from Liebour as possible

Give every registered voter £X to allocate on registered parties each year. If you don’t allocate it, it gets allocated automatically on the basis of votes at the last election (weight it by local/MP/whatever).
Then, ban all other political donations.
Bam. Democratised political power.

Needs to be publically funded, hate to say that as a tax payers but it would be fairer.
Every candidate gets x for their campaign, that will include all the obscure, extreme and funny ones.
Then between elections there could be a small allowance based on number of mps to administer party. No freebies, no donations. We urgently need to clean up politics.

Ban foreign donations, ban companies from making donations, cap individual donations. Democracy is meant to the for everyone, not just the rich.
