A moon halo – it requires certain conditions including ice crystals in the upper atmosphere – which distorts the light this way. See: [What is a moon halo? | Space](https://www.space.com/moon-halo)

Similar to rainbow but made odd by reflecting off the moon first.

As the sailors say, ring around the moon, bat weather’s coming soon.

Veritasium has a really nice video on rainbows where he describes higher order rainbows. This is one that you can observe directly due to higher order diffraction off atmospheric ice crystals.
It’s cool isn’t it! I saw my first halo around the moon this winter. The sky is very interesting during the winter months, such a variety of colours too.

I have taken a picture of this years ago….why am I not able to share my photo?

The Winter Halo. Google it up. Same principle as the rainbow, but at night, and from the moon.

The moon is powering up, soon it will unleash its true potential.

Meteorologists call it a sundog. Happens when the temperature is at the perfect point along with the angle of the sun to illuminate the frozen ice crystals in the upper atmosphere

It’s basically a rainbow, but refracted through ice crystals instead of raindrops.
Fun fact: sun dogs are biblically accurate angels; and are hypothesized to be the visual phenomenon that nomadic Bronze Age tribes would witness during times of struggle or prosperity.

The moon is very dusty, so it always has a cloud around it, but you can only see it when you start to go blind.

Wow I saw one yesterday for the first time in my life pretty cool

My grandpa always said that this means there’s going to be rain. It’s not a scientific statement of course but I always found it interesting.

I have seen this a time or two in my life. It’s cool to see with the naked eye

Sometimes, they have colors, like distorted rainbows.
I caught a sweet one tripping on shrooms – it was so damn beautiful I sat out in the snow for 3 hours watching it

I’ve seen one once in my life and I just happened to be tripping balls in Colorado with about a dozen friends. What a night.

“A ring around the sun or moon will bring rain or snow upon us soon.” It’s just light refracting off moisture in the atmosphere.

Are you in the northwest? The moon was just like this. It’s ice crystal up there at like 60,000 feet.

I first saw the moon halo about 15 years ago now with my best friend. We were skateboarding outside of his parent’s apartment when I fell straight onto my back. When I open my eyes I saw the halo staring right back at me. We were flabbergasted to say the least haha.
He took his own life about two years ago now and idk I just felt like I had to share. These always make me think of him; well that and fallout. Dude loved fallout 3 &new Vegas; wish he got to see the show.

Love these! Its a moon halo, basically just a moon rainbow, refracting through ice crystals in the upper atmosphere or a thin cloud layer.

It looks like a [22° halo](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/22%C2%B0_halo) around the moon, due to the accumulation of ice crystals in the atmosphere.

Hexagonal ice crystals refract the light (during day the sun, moon at night) at a 22 degree angle: https://cloudatlas.wmo.int/en/22-halo.html
