    1. The hottest earth has ever been…since the Eemian interglacial period about 125,000 years ago

    2. *hottest earth has been in recorded history.

That’s a lot different than ‘ever been’.

This is less scary if presented like “the average temp has gone up 3 degrees is 80 years”

I noticed that the graph only starts in 1930 or so. You cannot make the statement that this is the hottest it’s ever been.

    7. “The last time there was this much CO2 in the air, the oceans were 80 feet higher than they are now. Two things you should know: Half the world’s population lives within 120 miles of an ocean. And humans can’t breathe under water.”

Edit: in actuality, oceans were 6-9 meters (20-30 feet) higher than now the last time it was this warm, which isn’t quite the same as comparing CO2, but probably roughly comparable given what we’re talking about. If I get into it with a climate change denier, I bet them $1000 that this year will be one of the ten hottest on record. None of them have taken the bet so far. I’d be ok with being wrong and losing even.

    9. Felt like a normal to below avg year in temps. And yet the water levels are exactly the same as a few hundred years ago. See Plymouth Rock. Plus, why would all the rich spend millions on beach front property? Science is junk propaganda unless you can replicate a study YOURSELF! But that’s the essence of “Science”, the avg person doesn’t have the means to check these liars. Trust us!

Plants crave C02, without plants we die. Climate change is a death cult!

    10. I live in the sunbelt and have been here my whole life. Last year was the most miserable my family and I have ever been. It is to the point where we are looking at relocating once my kids are out of the house. It’s just about unbearable.

    11. Give us some more time. We can get this baby hotter.

Until we start inhabiting Mars or the Moon, Earth will suffer.

For all the climate deniers declaring how “alarmist” this article is, most of its word count is dedicated to talking about how unrealistic actual change is. It spends less time discussing our scientific understanding and more questioning if real change is pragmatic. A particularly objectionable point is the paragraph dedicated to China and India’s refusal to join the Paris Accords, with no mention of America’s withdrawal.

I’m pretty sure it was hotter when the dinosaurs lived but that’s just my opinion

    14. That’s not accurate, it’s the hottest it’s been since 125,000 years ago. But I can say with certainty, at least one of the next three years will be hotter, and odds are all three will be.

    15. DisillusionedBook on

Editorialised post title, it may very well be “in recorded history” (as in by human history records) but not “has ever been”.

This distinction is important because mis-describing facts (however innocently intentioned) leads to deniers leaping on it and spinning it.

      Do better

They figured out how to get that bothersome warming hiatus out of growth graph this century.

I don’t know if all the past data from sea temperatures was corrupt or not. But the speed at which the climate science community jumped on the explanation of engine heat in ships distorting the temperature of sea water was quite revealing.

One paper published and within year the well established warming hiatus was completely erased.

I was an engaged true believer that turned very skeptical of some of the motives in science as I actively watched immediate acceptance happen in real time, usually a very rare thing in science that has no observable and repeatable experiments.

Over time more studies were accepted that sought to prove temperatures data collections from the past overestimated sea temperatures and had to be lowered. (If past temperatures were lowered then the increases were more significant)

Now we have far more extensive data collection of sea temperatures in oceans all over world. Since we don’t have an equal number of collections points from the past, scientists interpolate what the temperatures were in the past based on various models from the data we do have.

The hottest temperatures ever are compared to many centuries in the past from which we have no definitive data. The climate has certainly warmed almost continuously since glaciers slid across what is now the United States and even since the much more recent little Ice Age, but I am sure it is to the degree many scientists suggest.

    17. No way. My Qanon uncle that never got above a D in science but is now somehow an expert on climate says this isn’t true. Hmmm…who to believe. The people that are actually intelligent and study this their entire lives of dunning Kruger afflicted folks that watched an echo changer YouTube video.

    18. Title error aside, the only feasible/scalable way to reduce emissions fast is nuclear power.

Solar panels and wind just won’t do it, especially not in the time frame we would need. If it’s really that important to Democrats, who have traditionally opposed nuclear power, they have to come around. We (and even developing countries) could reduce emissions by 90% in 30 years this way.

    19. Nobody cares. Want the proof? Not a single person is fully and permanently giving up their iPhones, air conditioning, airplane travel, cars, or plastics. In addition, the US government doesn’t believe in global warming. Want proof? The US military – operating ~800 military bases globally and waging endless environmentally destructive forever wars – is the single largest institutional emitter of carbon and the government has ZERO plans to curb any of it.

    20. There is a period in earth’s history that was so nightmarish and hot it is literally named after Hell – The Hadean Period.
