Are we really going to pretend that the pre-Trump USA was on track to save the world?
The brutal truth is that the world is weighing up the economic costs of pursuing these aims.

Reeves has basically said that economic growth trumps environmental targets which, as sad as it is, makes sense.
Why should a small island off the coast of mainland Europe create barriers to growth for the sake of the environment when the US and China donāt give a shit.

Green tech will always be cheaper long term than a diminishing resource because it will last forever.
Commerce will win out and hopefully the UK / EU will introduce carbon based tariffs to accelerate that.

As Iāve been arguing for 3 years now while the US, China, Australia and India all treat the Paris Accords as a joke I refuse to take them seriously. I fully understand climate change however the idea that the U.K. can somehow have an impact on a global scale is absurd.

The EU and UK should put tariffs on US goods quickly. If the US is simply ignoring environmental standards, that’s a huge competitive advantage which will need to be addressed using tariffs to level the playing field.
That’s what tariffs are supposed to be for, addressing unfair advantages which manufacturers in another country may have, not addressing random political grievance.

We will have the exact same impact we did before. Climate change isnāt a binary, itās a gradient. Every ton of CO2 increases the temperature by an imperceptible but impactful amount. Every private jet ride could make a storm just that bit more powerful enough to kill someone. If you take the train ten times instead of driving, that could make a drought just slightly better and save someone.
Itās impossible to keep your sanity when thinking about this, so we just need to do our best and not worry. But as a nation weāll have the exact same impact the next 4 years as we did the last 4.

It doesn’t make a blind bit of difference to the environment what the UK does to combat climate change when one of the world’s largest countries is run by people who are actively campaigning for it.Ā

Weāre going to be using gas for the foreseeable future. Gas boilers arenāt going anywhere and we rely on gas power stations for when itās not windy. Why do we not issue more gas extraction licenses, raise revenue instead of importing LNG until weāre fully ready to transition?

Think about what it means for the people losing their homes due to climate change. The supposed most powerful man in the world just told them all he doesn’t care. We are relatively fortunate in the uk that we dont yet see the full severity of climate change however some parts of the world are quickly becoming uninhabitable either due to extreme heat or flooding. A lot of small island nations for example that produce very little co2 do not have the political power to enforce global change to protect their homes, they are reliant on deals like the paris agreement and powerful figures like the potus leading the way.

For one silver lining it means we will have the advantage if we manage to deliver on net zero technologies and keep the processes as closely guarded secrets. The next US government after Trump will be begging to go back to net zero by which time we should be ready to sell them new technologies. With Trump at the helm they won’t have the funds to innovate for themselves the next 4 years so it’s a market advantage for us.

When China alone produces 22% of the worlds fossil fuel CO² emissions and it is on the increase I don’t see how much of a difference me recycling the lid with my bottle of vimto makes.
There are no trade embargoes in place with China to ensure they comply and work towards a greener future because it is all propoganda and dodgy deals behind the scenes.
I have to turn my TV off at the wall when I go to bed but it is ok to have a bridge lit up in pretty colours; it is all hypocrisy.
We need drastic measures to affect climate change. Changes made on a large scale and done internationally.

I think we are going to have to re-frame climate action in countries like the UK, from ānet zeroā to address a global problem to sustainability to improve local outcomes e.g. energy independence through renewables, better living conditions through insulating cold homes, better air quality through public transport and EV vehicles etc.
AND letās not forget that adaptation is important. The effects of climate change need to be proactively addressed, particularly now we know certain large emitting countries plan to roll back net zero commitments.

I think it should mean everyone in the U.K. should write to their pension provider and lobby them to disinvest in US oil and gas.. letās redirect the nations pension pots towards renewables. As usual two things can be true and we find extreme positions advocated on Reddit. Both these are true:
1. Taking over from the Biden administration which had an exemplary record on climate change (the Inflation Reduction Act being the largest climate investment in history), Trump set the USA on diametrically the opposite course. Its policy is now to accelerate the climate change emergency. The USA may unilaterally undo all the climate change efforts which were in place.
2. All the doomism is not going to help anything. Climate change is a fact but will have to be managed. Technology and lifestyle changes will be key. It may come with some silver linings such as the cold parts of the world will be improved. Hot regions had better get themselves some air conditioning and adapt to working indoors and in the evenings. It seems very likely that climate change will be very bad for over a billion people; but pre-emptively weeping for them and doomist rhetoric like “We’re fucked”, doesn’t exactly help us bolster our resolve to manage climate change.

If you want a nice cosy and protective welfare state, you need cheap energy to facilitate this.

We’ve already hugely reduced our energy use as a nation through simple things like LED bulbs. Things that have no impact on our lives, but which save society a fortune.
There’s no reason to stop developments like this. People who complain about net zero sound to me like people who complained about gas fires replacing coal fires.

Uk needs lower energy prices , imo we should drill the heck out of the North Sea and spend the extra tax on nuclear and renewables . Energy self sufficiency should be a goal which then comes low carbon .
