In a way, it’s more insulting that he’s implied we’re going to get favourable treatment in comparison to other countries/blocs. He’s basically saying he knows we’ll roll over and let him tickle our tummies.

    2. Macho-Fantastico on

He’s such a bully, and the only way to get back at bullies is to stand up to them.

    3. Thalassinoides on

I really don’t want to deal with any country which elected a conman and rapist as their leader.

    4. Britain stands with its brothers and sisters in Canada and its cousins in the EU, fuck the US

    5. The annoying thing about people like Trump is that they think they’re clever because they play by different rules.

But the problem is, it only gives them a very short term advantage, because the moment others see them “cheating” everyone else starts cheating too.

Hence why the rules of engagement existed to begin with.

And that’s why politics is in such a state across the world – because everyone has had to embrace utter madness in order to compete with the maniacs who have thrown out the rulebook.

And now we’re going to be doing it with the economy! Great…

    6. If hes adding tariffs to imports to virtually every country they trade with, isnt this just going to increase the cost of stuff for Americans?

“Deal” can be worked out. Just stop sending Ukraine money, let Musk plug his data skimming hard drives into the Treasury, replace Starmer with the trout-faced Reform man, and knock down Scotland all the way down to the Lake District to put in a couple hundred golf holes. Just some easy basic things to maybe allow some cheap exports of beef flavoured hormone-filled mystery meat.

Meet our quality standards and gain access to our glorious market.

No lowering of standards to accept cheap, shoddy, foreign goods.

That applies to China and Europe and the rest of them too in my opinion.

    9. Can we just time waste for 4 years until he’s gone?

I don’t see the point in making deals with America while Trump is in power.

    10. He mentions that the EU doesn’t buy American cars. Maybe because they wouldn’t fit on roads built before America existed.

It’s bad enough driving on our roads with everyone wanting to be in a large SUV, last thing we need are jacked up pick up trucks driving around. Plus most of them don’t meet regulations and barely make double figures on MPG.

I was reading an article which said our exports to the USA are relatively minor in comparison with other major economies, it’s mostly services like banking and consultancy which typically aren’t subject to tariffs, so that’s possibly why we’re deemed to be exempt – it really wouldn’t have a massive impact on us.

    13. America’s sucked us dry for years. Their grubby politicians just want more and more and more despite America’s economy being much better than ours right now. You have to stop and ask, what do they want? Why is it they have so many bases, so much military and economic power?

They’re taking over the world, and it’s time to fight back.

    14. nothingexceptfor on

It is funny that he was elected in the US supposedly because people didn’t like inflation and wanted prices to go down, never mind all the shitty things he was going to bring with him to them and the rest of the world, prices was what mattered, and now everything is essentially going to be extra expensive for them by order of his elected president 🫣

    15. Sea-Caterpillar-255 on

Once again the UK has the opportunity to either pursue it’s own interests and sovereignty OR to betray our “principles” and obey our master in Washington.

    16. The orange man could actually do us a solid and put restrictive tariffs up. “Oh no, maybe now we should seek single market access” and Farage and his lot of grifters wouldn’t have the “FrEe TrAdE with UsA!” Line of attack.

    17. Sounds like Trump is hellbent on reversing Brexit. Coz, that’s the outcome here – drive us back to the EU.

    18. fish-and-cushion on

Shouldn’t we be unequivocally backing Canada here? Don’t they still sing about god saving our king and all that nonsense?

    19. To be talked about like that by a rapist and a criminal!

Just be as nasty as we can to Trump please!

As he says there may be some pain but it will be worth it to have nothing to do with Putins puppet!

Time to make the US a pariah state, until that wood-stained wank bubble is forced out the White House

    21. AmIbaconingyet on

Oh jebus! They are trying to force their Monsanto seeds and shitty meat on us. We need back in the EU ASAP.
Sorry leavers, unless you want to be eating poison, ruining farmers ability to grow crops and paying £5k for your gout treatment we need to admit it was a failed experiment and rejoin.
Safety in numbers and it will hopefully get Farage off our back as right now he wants his hands on the PM position so he can do his facist bidding for his rich nazi pals.

    22. Fuck it just stop trade with the USA altogether then and get all our produce from countries where they aren’t being run by Nazis. We need to stop treating the USA as allies and start treating them like the hostile actors they actually are.

If only there was some kind of trading union we could join with our neighbours

    23. Every country in the world is already broadening their trade options.

No chance they do this and the UK isn’t preparing.

If we play it right America going bananas could be a great opportunity for the UK and EU.

    24. I don’t think he meant to say the UK is out of line – I think this was another example of when he says the wrong word/name (in this case, saying the UK when he meant to say “the EU is way out of line”) but rather than admit he misspoke, he inserts an “and”, pretending he meant to say both things.

Obviously this isn’t a good thing for us – unless it prompts some of the Trump cheerleaders at home to reevaluate their stance on how we should deal with him – but I don’t think it means as much as the headline would make you believe. His initial response to the question was a better indicator of where he’s at with us.

Edit: Here’s an example of the self-correction strategy I’m talking about

    25. The only way to deal with bullies is to stand up to them. If everybody just decided to ignore the US, at least until the inevitable war he tries to start, we can all just trade amongst ourselves and leave the Americans to swim in their own shit.

    26. American food standards are significantly lower than what we have in the UK. I hope Keir actually does the right thing and gets a backbone. We should not be bullied nor will we bullied by a gassy Wotsit

    27. All of this is only possible because they’re called “tarriffs” and not “import tax”. The far right is apparently not allergic to taxes, provided they use a less scary word that they don’t understand

    28. Positive_Vines on

He doesn’t have much negotiating power against the UK. The US already has a trade surplus with us + we fulfil the 2% defence target for NATO

    29. Honestly we do barely any trade with the US compared to the EU, this would make absolutely no sense. To undercut our farmers and lower our standards?
We banned/phased out asbestos in the 1990s. They banned it… last year. We do not want America’s poisonous plastic, second rate electronics and poor quality carcinogenic food.
Trump is shooting himself in the foot. Americans will want to import these goods still, and the cost will go to them.

    30. Dear god it’s been a week and it already feels like a year.

What an utterly backwards and corrupt nation America is becoming.

Russia really has run the most successful propaganda campaign in modern history.

    31. philljarvis166 on

Why would we negotiate any deal with this administration? He signed trade agreements with Mexico and Canada during his last term, how much are they worth now?

He’s a bully. Tariffs are his current favourite stick. Someone has to stand up to him, so he finds out how tariffs affect his own country.

    32. Environmental_Pay336 on

We don’t need corn syrup and fucked up chicken we need to be supporting British farmers in the right way. We don’t need Trump and his disgusting ways. We don’t need a deal if anything we need to be making a deal with the EU that works for all of us… If that involves us being a part of the EU again I say so be it as brexit has done nothing for us but make us a joke to our politicians who think they can take the piss out of us.

    33. Thevanillafalcon on

Now starmer handles this will be massive for his premiership I think:

What he should do is strengthen ties with Canada, the commonwealth and the EU, maybe even China to a small degree.

You can’t bargain with Donald Trump, his word means nothing, he’s currently tearing up trade deals he himself put in place in his last term, none of his supporters have any economic sense, all the polices are based on the notion America is the greatest and everyone will do what they want.

We all need to essentially prepare for a post US world
