    1. **Three Worst Single-Day Stock Market Drops in Modern History, Dow Jones, 1987-2020**

The intent here was to compare the worst single-day drops in the Dow Jones in modern times (since the Great Depression). These drops were put into the context of the previous high and the period until that high is recovered. These three separate drop events are charted as a percentage change from the opening price of the drop date so that the recoveries can be fairly compared.

Data cleaned and aggregated in MacOS Numbers, then charted in R, output via an SVG device, and then refined in Adobe Illustrator.

idk, feel like we are still recovering from the Great Recession. People’s opinions on the economy broke that day.

The title seems kinda misleading. This isn’t the time to recover the losses on that one date but the time to recover to the previous high. By that metric these aren’t necessarily even the most relevant as they’re not the longest bear markets.

    4. The funny thing is 1987 and 2020 still ended in the green and were on uptrends, while the 2000 recession took until 2013 to fully recover, mostly thanks to 2008.

    5. Ok these are crashes.
If someone had knowledge these events were going to happen, say a week before each, through insider info, how would they be able to capitalise on each event?

The Dow is a metric for the market. It consists of only 30 companies. All of them are in the S&P 500.

Still it’s kind of cool to see this info.

My parents were just getting their heads above water in the late 80’s when Black Monday clobbered them.

I was just getting my head above water when the great recession clobbered me.

My kids were getting their head above water when Covid-19 clobbered them.

      Fucking terrible timing all round.

    8. All 3 drops occurred under the final ~year Republican administrations, while all 3 recoveries took place during Democrat administrations.

      I’m sure that’s unrelated though…
