    1.  Nooooo really??!

I am very shocked! The people who run their campaign on anger and fear, often backed by the very rich and powerful who have a vested interest in removing regulation and weakening the powers of the establishment (especially environmental and financial regulation) are more likely to lie to get into power?!

I don’t believe it, having watched people like Trump, Putin, Orban, Fico, Bolsonaro etc. I’ve seen absolutely no evidence that these sort of people resort to lying to win.

Lies have blown their beans up your muff and scarpered while the truth is still putting its condom on.

      Really wow.
no I should be more supportive it’s just that I know this study is gonna get burned with all the other scientific studies in 4 years time.

    4. Going to be fun watching a load of triggered right wingers try and knock this post down with a load of fake news and cope.

    5. I don’t know any far-left posters, do you? I mean it would be helpful to see examples of a far-left post for context

    6. I’m not surprised in the slightest to be honest but I would love to see the level of funding that each side of the spectrum gets far left and far right

      > Misinformation was less useful to far-left populists, who focus more on economic grievances, but far-right populists’ emphasis on cultural grievances and opposition to democratic norms was “fertile ground” for misinformation, the authors said.

      > The study also highlighted the “symbiotic relationship” between far-right populists and “alternative” media. “Radical-right populists have been effective in creating and utilising alternative media ecosystems that amplify their viewpoints,” Törnberg said.

If the far left had as much resources as the far right is currently getting I should imagine they could also generate all the misinformation they need to advance their course. The far right is backed by billionaires and (for want of a better phrase) anti-western powers.

Im not trying to be all “yeah but what about” over this, but I do believe given the same financial backing the far left would do exactly the same.

    7. Somehow I think that “misinformation” in question is only misinformation by far-left standards. Just remember how much “misinformation” and “conspiracy theories” turned out to be true in the last few years. Origins of COVID, Pakistani grooming gangs, independent press controlled by USAID…

    8. *Far* right? Just any right wing statement is basically bollocks at this point. The right wing hasn’t had a single policy that has benefitted this country over all for at least 40 years (can you name one?). Everything they propose is cloaked in a layer of lies, misdirection, and bullshit.

So the insight of this social media study is that if someone is complaining about the immigrants, they are complaining about the immigrants, but if they are complaining about the economy, they may be actually complaining about the economy. And Labour will get pummeled by both sides then if they don’t fix the economy.

    10. Well duh. This is the big problem. They have no moral qualms about lying or distorting the facts. And they spew this tidal wave of shite on every platform at such a rate that actual fact based reporting just drowns in the flood sensationalist propaganda.

This is how Brexit happened, how MAGA happened, how Nazism happened.

      >Far-right populists are significantly more likely to spread fake news on social media than politicians from mainstream or far-left parties

I’d be interested to see the figures for only far-left and far-right parties, including mainstream left seems dishonest.

Far right populist is quite niche. And you’re comparing it to the whole of the left?

    13. I can’t believe the same people who talk about muslamic ray guns, believe in trickle-down economics, and think vaccines cause autism would be more likely to lie.

I’m shocked. Shocked, I tell you!

    14. Leading_Man_Balthier on

Can’t possibly be true – we all just live in a radical left wing echo chamber and we don’t have the minerals to face up to real life!
