    1. I can’t believe we are in a place where 0.1% is classified as a boost… but here we are!

    2. JourneyThiefer on

Taking into account population growth is likely higher than 0.1% for a quarter is this not basically a fall in GDP per capita?

So the average person is not really better off even with GDP growth, when it’s so low, they’re basically slowly getting worse off

    3. SNIP SNAP SNIP SNAP SNIP SNAP!

Either the economy is doomed and in recession or it’s not.

WHICH ONE IS IT?!! Pathetic media man, gets on my fucking nerves.

    4. Please for the love of god spend some fucking money. If the government doesn’t invest in the UK then nobody else will!

    5. I don’t buy it, it only takes 0.1% to keep us out of an official recession…… I honestly believe that the numbers are being fudged.

    6. Celebration of stagnation while population increase means we are actually all poorer. Fucking hell this is a low standard. We will be serfs by the end.

    7. “We knew the Tories economic plan could deliver growth.”

-The media when the point that the Rachel Reeves’ budget will be implemented in April is made.

    8. 0.1% up versus 0.1% down won’t really feel like much of a difference, but it might boost confidence to avoid the headlines about a possible recession.

And 0.4% growth in the *month* might be a bit more significant if it’s the start of something more.

It looks like the government might finally be turning things around after the shitshow they inherited:

      – Wages are rising significantly faster than inflation for the first time in what feels like forever

      – Inflation is stable. We’re talking about the possibility of inflation rising to 3% or 4% as a worst case scenario rather than the 10% to 12% figures we saw under Johnson, Truss and Sunak

      – Interest rates are well off their peak and they’re stable. We’re not going back to the days of 0.25% interest rates, and that’s probably healthy. But rates are significantly lower than they were this time last year

      – We might be starting to see a *tiny* bit of growth. Hopefully there’s something the government and the BoE can do to boost that!

If people are saying that all of this is nothing, I think they’re forgetting just how bad things were over the past few years!

Half the commenters here thinking they’re getting a penthouse in Mayfair when/if immigration gets stopped ☠️

Feel the benefits of our .1% growth, we can now all retire 2 days early than expected

    11. As if anyone is going to buy this. Production was barely 0.8% and that includes Xmas. Government borrowing is included in this figure as well by the OBR. Anyone in the construction business will tell you it’s on its ass. GDP per head also fell. The OBR have a horrible trait of fudging and revising figures down the line and you be sure this will no doubt be case.

0.1% growth is shockingly bad considering the budget/borrowing and GDP

If Labout attempt to spin this as some success I’d be very very worried. They have landed us in what is a ‘technical’ recession. Wait till the tax hikes hit.

    12. Time for the Jack Sparrow meme.

“That is the worst growth I’ve ever seen, sir.”

“Ah, but you admit it is still growth…”

The issue is without economic pain and taxing the rich more there is no easy way out of this.

    14. Strangely__Brown on

I honestly think it’s a culture problem at this point.

We tend to judge people for buying outlandish things or sending kids to private education. We even judge people for not paying enough tax (despite the majority paying _fuck all_).

Maybe we need to take the opposite approach and start judging people for not earning enough.

Wait, didn’t the FT mention yesterday that Reeves is in a pickle due to disappointing growth? I mean, 0.1% sounds pretty shit without context…

    16. I want Rachel Reeves as my accountant, she is so good with money, she is soo on the ball…..

What I really like about the Labour Party, it is the way they deliver exactly what they say they will… and even the non biased BBC back them up to the hilt….

I am so pleased we have them in power, I sleep so soundly at night now, knowing the country is in safe and honest hands….

Regardless of the party in power – by which I mean Labour or Tories – the UK is being ruined by a bunch of absolute wankers who live in a bubble and only give a shit about power and making decisions that ensure they stay enriched and in power.

Immigration is an utter disgrace – it should be used to encourage people with skills to this country for the benefit of us all. Instead, its sole purpose is to increase GDP and mask the fact that GDP per capita is screwed.

And why is GDP per capita screwed? Because the majority of investment in this country is London-centric and it’s destroying the UK. There is absolutely no need for a third runway at Heathrow Airport – the demand is not coming just from London, so they could expand airports elsewhere and distribute the passenger traffic. HS2? Abandoned at Birmingham now so it’s just another glorified express train to London. And it goes on.

And house prices? A Ponzi scheme established to inflate GDP and make people who own houses feel richer. Fuelled by unnecessary immigration and, worst of all, letting foreigners pile money into property that they leave vacant and let AirBnb run riot, thus destroying the rental market.

This is all so obvious it is sickening. And both Labour and the Tories continue to lie to the British Public and siphon more money for the benefit of the richest while the country overall becomes poorer and people suffer.

Until we have someone strong and honest in charge, nothing will change. And good luck with anyone like that getting into power here.

Oh, look, the guardian again. Another media source said we were facing our second recession in a year. Out pops the guardian…

    20. Not a brit. Offtopic.

Can I ask why this Rachel Reeves person is almost always refered to like this? News make it sound like it’s her doings in private life affecting UK’s economy. Why not refer to her position in government, or the whole agency. There’s like 100s of people working with economy and they make it sound like it’s just one person doing all the work and being responsible for it.

Being from a different country looking at those headlines is always so strange. Nobody would write it like this where I’m from.

    21. Meanwhile, with 16 rounds of sanctions on them, in the middle of a war with a only 13% tax rate, Russia’s economy grew by 4.1%. High energy prices are killing this country.

    22. PleasantAd7961 on

That’s statistical error and would have happend no matter what someone says. 0.1% is hear nor there

    23. > As we reported earlier, the construction sector was estimated to have grown by 0.5% in the final months of 2024.

This feeling… so strange, a government achieving things that it has set out to do. We’re so used to all the bluster, posturing, scandals and leadership changes of the Tory years that it feels odd to read news stories about stuff being built or targets being moved towards, or manifesto policies being enacted in legislation.

It’s not exciting but even just a stable UK economy will be very attractive over the next few years to investors and companies looking to pivot away from the daily madness of the US.
