I’m putting this edit at the top due to the frequency of dumbass replies: I am fucking aware we paid slave owners; not the slaves. It’s not like we could’ve fucking checked how many hours they clocked in and pay them accordingly via a bank transfer over their time as a slave, legally back then they weren’t entitled to anything because they were SLAVES. If we have the slaves the money directly, what the fuck are they going to do with besides either have it stolen, or PAY the owners for their FREEDOM?

Britain already paid reparations for slavery and didnt finish paying it off until 2015.

British taxpayers today have literally paid for slavery.

How many countries can truly say the same?

      Edit:
“That’s not what reparations is about”

Using the definition of the world reparations, it is most certainly that.

“It’s not reparations because we didn’t pay the slaves themselves”

If it’s not reparations because the direct slaves themselves didn’t get the money, then inversely paying people today who were also not the slaves transported by Britain (everyone alive today) then that wouldn’t be reparations either, in fact by that logic we couldn’t possibly pay it as they’re all dead.

“Britain isn’t good for doing so”

Britain was historically unique as it defied thousands of years of human condition that engaged in slavery, Britain paid for their freedom, at no benefit but immense cost. If you can’t appreciate that for its momentous achievement. Then you’re probably the type of person who would tell a firefighter who just saved a girl from a burning house “you didn’t need to kick the door down mate”.

Maybe when the politicians pocket all this money they’ll stop ruining mauritius by running drugs in with their connections.

An utter betrayal from the most spineless PM we have ever seen.

On the adjudication of ICJ judges which supported Russian invasion of Ukraine, and another who is tied to China.

Senator Kennedy sums this issue up quite concisely.

      >”the United Nations got mad at the United Kingdom and said you’re bad bad bad colonialists….. The United Nations has no jurisdiction over the United Kingdom… This is cell deep stupid…. The people of the Chagos islands don’t even have any affinity to Mauritius… We will stand with the United Kingdom and tell the United Nations to fill out a hurt feelings report if needed”

    5. Reparations is a key buzz word, as soon as anyone mentions it you can immediately discount their argument and opinions.

    6. One_Network518 on

Our reparations for slavery is ending the whole fucking thing in 1808. The enforcing other countries to do the same. Get fucked.

    7. That is possibly the most effective word to use to make Labour look even more pathetic in this deal.

    8. What is it with these people and deliberately using buzzwords that the people they want money from hate?

    9. I hope the reparation gang realise if certain other countries at the time could subjugate half the world they would have done it no questions asked. Also I doubt they would have paid anything to us being the other way round. All of our ancestors raided the next village. How the hell do they think humanity got to this point?!

    10. NinjaOfMuffins on

Pmsl. That was Islam and the Arab world… FFS those islands weren’t even inhabited either.
Mauritius is Indian, despite being closer to Africa and no this is not a stereotype on swimming…

    11. CanaryWundaboy on

Nah, fuck off. Sorry but we’ve done more than any other country to end slavery, we’ve paid compensation and no-one alive today in this country has owned a slave. If you want the islands, take ‘em. Because that’s what you want, right? It’s not only about the money, right?

    12. Lmao. Are they trying to torpedo their own deal, which gives them everything they want and billions on top? God if this deal goes through after all this, Starmer is a top idiot.

    13. normanbrandoff1 on

I firmly believe this guy is just trolling Starmer at this point but makes no sense why he is making it more and more unpalatable

    14. Wasn’t it the French who colonised Mauritius? We just took it from them because they wouldn’t stop attacking our ships.

    15. dinosaurRoar44 on

Right so when do the Arabic and African slave owners pay too? Their families are going to pay right?

When do the Irish get their reperations?

When do the white people who were subject to Arabic slave trading get theirs?

I’m not against fixing a problem but to hold a group of people hostage, financially, for something they were not a part of isn’t right. And it’s taxpayers money, so many people of the UK from many ethnicities and creeds and colours have paid towards this for many years. Why should they have to?

      It’s fucking lunacy

    16. ChoiceResearcher5549 on

If they’re saying it’s “reparations”, end the agreement, give them nothing and continue to own the islands.

    17. AcademicIncrease8080 on

The UK literally did more than any other civilisation or power in human history to end slavery – if anything we should be the ones getting paid reparations since it cost us so much money.

    18. Many_Assignment7972 on

Reparations for what? Mauritius is a long way away from Diego Garcia and Mauritius has never governed this Island(s). There is no need to offer them an explanation let alone a huge amount of money. Britain can allow some of the Islanders back to their homeland and the base can continue as it has done. Britain can choose to charge the US if they wish to continue using the base and maybe pass some of that rent to local authorities for local projects. A skeleton staff of RAF/RN/Army logistics, sig int etc can be posted there on either accompanied or unaccompanied tours.

    19. Why do I feel that Mauritians are acting like scammers on Kitboga video when they’re looking at a bunch of bitcoin just out of their grasp…?

    20. In case you’re not aware, Mauritius has absolutely zero moral claim to the Chagos Islands. They are in a position to claim them now due to them having been part of the same British colonial area but never otherwise having been the same country.

    21. My girlfriend is Mauritian and her parents are Chagossian.they do not want this. the chagossian community want their island back. give them back the island if you are going to give it away. do not give it to a corrupt government who have no claim to the island. give it back to the chagossian people or keep hold of it as a base. this is all ridiculous.

    22. Why the fuck are Britain paying any kind of reparations ?

Once we get it from everyone else they can have theirs

    23. I physically cannot comprehend how an ostensibly intelligent/educated/experienced politician at the head of a massive political party which suffers with image issues on foreign policy/immigration/diversity in the media thinks that pushing through with this decision is sensible or reasonable.

    24. fuck reparations, the UK. England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland have changed the world for the better

    25. Every-Fishing2060 on

When does North Africa pay us for enslaving 1.5 Million of our people before the Barbary wars?

    26. DriveIntrepid3438 on

This is clearly an issue we should be voting on should we give them 9bn for living in paradise or shouid we put 9 billion into fixing what ever we can in the north.

”This is insane. This is cell-deep stupid. This is—this is bone-deep, down-to-the-marrow stupid.

Because the United Nations wants the United Kingdom to feel guilty, they want to give our military base and their military base to Mauritius. Now, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom can stop this. And Marco Rubio, our new Secretary of State, is against it. I haven’t talked to him directly, but I think President Trump is against it.

The United Kingdom is our friend. I went to school there for a while, I love them, and I want to see their Prime Minister do well—but he needs to put down the bong. He needs to put down the bong.

This makes absolutely no sense. It’s going to be a part of his legacy if he gives away this island and our military base to, in effect, what will eventually be China.

So I would say to the Prime Minister tonight: I don’t mean any disrespect—I want to say this respectfully. I shouldn’t have said the bong part. I take it back.

Please, Mr. Prime Minister, don’t do this. We will stand with you in telling the United Nations, who’s upset with you, to go fill out a hurt feelings report—because we’re not doing it. We’ll stand with you.”

      — US Senator Kennedy

    28. Then quite simply it cannot be allowed to happen. Apart from being batshit insane, it would set a precedent we don’t mean to set.

    29. PeaceSellsButImBrian on

Okay Belgium has to pay to rebuild the Congo. Spain should give all Spanish land to the native south Americans. The French have to pay for 1066. In all seriousness where do you stop? This is just opportunistic “gibs free stuff” because they know we’re so afraid of being called racist if we don’t get beaten with the stick of morality for the sins of the father. Cry me a fucking river
