    1. Do not support the USA plans tell them too get lost and we Europe will sort this ourselves. i.e. Donald & Vance go to hell

According to the Times “Starmer has also said that he’s “ready and willing” to commit British troops to Ukraine for peacekeeping purposes.”

So that suggests UK believes there might be a ceasefire.
Peace keeping on that border would be bloody dangerous tho, really wouldn’t want to be posted there.

    3. It’s a nice feeling to feel proud and optimistic for once from my government.

I mean we have to be at this point. We know we can’t rely on America going forwards.

I’d like to see more European leaders follow our lead on this, because what are we saying to Russia, China or any other country that’s hostile towards us in Europe if we let the continent be redrawn by Trump and Putin?

    5. I think this is going the way of the USA negotiating such terrible terms Ukraine has to refuse.

The USA withdraws support because all trump sees is money. He doesn’t understand democracy, alliances, deterrent etc.

This allows him to leave with face because the Ukrainians wanted to keep fighting.

Europe can’t allow Russia to salami slice through Europe, and so troops are sent to Ukraine during whatever negotiated ceasefire.

Then we all hold our breath every now and then for decades like south and north Korea.

    6. Taking the lead and showing solidarity with Ukraine and Europe is the correct thing to do.

Unfortunately, the US should no longer be considered an ally under the current administration.

    7. The whole of Europe needs to step up and be prepared to defend itself. It’s clear the US won’t do it.

We need to start a huge investment drive into our native and European weapons manufacturers. We have to be able to produce our vital armaments either by ourselves, or in cooperation with our European allies. Including the nuclear arsenal.

We have to start detaching from the US. They’re too unpredictable. Too risky.

    9. I can’t believe the states has turned its back on democracy and attempting to strongarm Europe while taking sides with the aggressor. Glad we’re standing up for Ukraine.

    10. We definitely voted the right guy in. He is committing to Ukraine properl, standing up to russia. Even Trump has warmed to him, that is no mean feat! I mean, he is the Labour leader, the ideological opponent of the american republican party right now and trump has warm words for him.

    11. I must stress that this is if Russia and America agree to a deal that Ukraine will accept, which it won’t. No one is putting troops in Ukraine with a war going on. This is to enforce a peace deal which won’t happen because Russia doesn’t want NATO troops in Ukraine.

    12. Unlikely_Read3437 on

Ok, and if Russia decide to retaliate and randomly fire a load of missiles at UK – do we actually have the capacity to repel an attack like that? Genuine question.

    13. Very dark times ahead I fear. British forces facing down Russian forces in Eastern Europe is something I genuinely never thought we’d see in our lifetimes if you’d asked me 5 years ago. A deeply depressing step but a necessary one in the event there is a ceasefire or if Ukrainian lines begin to collapse.

On the practical side, a peacekeeping border force in Ukraine will need to be in the 100,000s range to be credible, if the borders are drawn where the lines are currently.

Unless we are about to see a BAOR equivalent created on the Dnieper, where British serviceemebers and their families live for decades and spend their entire careers there, you are going to need a 4:1, 5:1 or maybe even 6:1 ratio on non-deployed:deployed personnel. Assuming Britain were to contribute 10000 combat soldiers to this, you’re talking maybe 60000 men and women required to field this force on 6-month rotations if they are based out of the UK.

This is not remotely possible with the current British Army. Then factor in the equipment it’d need to have sufficient readiness and capability, you’d be looking at recruitment and rearmament drives the likes of which we have never seen in this country size nearly 90 years ago. Do we even remember how to do this?

I have spent the last few years being called a Russian shill.

      Why?

Because i didn’t support the deaths of Ukrainian men in a war that i opposed.

Billions have been wasted and hundreds of thousands of men being killed and thousands of families being ruined.

      And for what?

What has nato financial support of this conflict done for the last few years beyond drag the stalemate out.

All the European leaders are all giving it the big talk now but they continued to fund putin buying his gas eve after he invaded Ukraine in 2014 and took crimea.

None of the countries at macrons little meeting this week increased defence spending.

Ukraine had a 1 in a million chance in the early weeks and months to win. When that window passed it was always going to result in having to negotiate from a weekend position.

Life isn’t a movie and the good guys don’t always win.

Suddenly everyone is ready to increase defence spending but if we did that 4 years ago we would be much stronger as a continent and instead of waiting for Trump it could have been us forcing an end to the war.

Instead they are having meetings they could have had any time in the last 4 years.

      Why didn’t they?

Why only now an end is in sight to the killing are Europeans suddenly keen to be completely involved in this when they didn’t a week ago.

It makes the UK and Europe look ridiculous.

When Russia first escalated the war 4 years ago we should have ramped up defence spending and began deploying troops in eastern Europe for “training exercise” as soon as the statement happened we could have used the troops on putins borders to force a peace.

Instead we did nothing but deplete our own stockpiles and reserves to prolong an unwinnable war and put our selves militarily and diplomatically in a weaker bargaining position.

If we wanted Ukraine to return to its original borders we needed to be prepared to put our troops on the ground years ago.

The last two and a half years of suffering has been due to the performative support given and being all carrot and no stick.

for some reason acknowledgement of the cold hard reality and not demanding a miracle has been considered a controversial opinion.

What ever this peace deal looks like it’s probably not going to be exactly what Ukraine wants or what their supporters want, but it will end the war.

We have to wait to see the terms but the question needs to be asked why couldn’t it have been negotiated earlier?

If others in mainland Europe also have this in mined then I am all for it as long as we’re not alone.

I hope you guys don’t send anyone to go die or get maimed in the drone wars. There’s nothing to be to gained

I think Starmer needs to lead by example.

All these lefties are so willing sacrifice other people lives and push the world closer to WW3

    18. This is leadership. See the article from previous defense chap saying we’d have no chance. Tories talk up defence but spent sweet f a on it. It won’t be forgotten.

    19. ShufflingToGlory on

The armchair generals are out in force tonight. The liberty of western Europe will be nurtured with the blood of other people’s children!

Honestly if you feel so strongly about it show some balls and join that foreign legion of tourists fighting for Ukraine. (Not an actual endorsement, it’s kind of a murky area legally speaking)

    20. Informal_Drawing on

I was on board until I read the stupid reason for doing so.

Screw the American idiot president and his idiotic ideas.

    21. I think everyone who votes who’s fit for service should have to go to war if a war breaks out. Why are people allowed to vote for values and ideas, and engage in the process of sending people to battle, without any desire to fight for them or join, but expect other people to defend their values and ideas for them? That’s pure narcissism.

Authority without responsibility is cancer to society.

    22. AdRealistic4984 on

Put some Italian soldiers there, they’re ambivalent on the whole over there. The Russians think we’re the ones spurring the Americans on to fuck them up!

    23. Our debt to GDP ratio is at 100%. We have had 0.1% economic growth last quarter. Productivity has been down for a decade, an ageing population that’s not being replaced even with our high immigration — how an earth can we foot the bill for a peacekeeping/potential war in Eastern Europe?

Absolute insanity. If this goes ahead, I will very likely vote for Reform.

    24. > Sir Keir Starmer says he’s ‘ready and willing’ to put British troops on the ground in Ukraine, as part of security guarantees offered in any peace deal.

Bit of an important detail that, LBC.

Anyway I suppose this is a clever move. If a deal is coming, the chief concern is Russia invading again, which they’ll be less inclined to do if western armies are ‘keeping the peace’ (guarding the border).

Trump can decline, but given that he’s constantly telling NATO to pull its weight that makes his actual concerns plain to see.

However, say a deal does happen and we do place our troops in Ukraine. In 5, 10 years, will Trump’s America even still be providing a nuclear umbrella? Will NATO still even exist? If not, Russia might simply push us aside.

    25. Then maybe actually up the fucking funding of our Armed Forces. Jesus Christ. I genuinely think Starmer gets too much shit for his time in office so far. He’s had to juggle some utter dogshit “foundations.” But shit like pussyfooting around with defence spending and the Chagos stuff is just making us look weak.

Get on with it. We cannot rely on US defence anymore. Europe has taken things too lightly post WW2 and is now facing a threat that has been staring it in the face for decades.
