After those visits, we’ll know for sure I guess, but I can’t imagine right now they can possibly trust the US as a ‘backstop’ even if it agreed.

The British and the French can’t even work together to effectively prevent third-worlders in inflatable dinghies from crossing the Channel. Call me a pessimist, but given that we’ve demonstrated, at best, a lackluster commitment to protecting our own borders, how are we going to ‘reassure’ a country 1,000 miles away that we’ll protect theirs?
If they could protect Ukraine, how come they haven’t been? Bit late now. Course as run down as the armed forces are not like they’re going to be much help. Off they go, fighting in a foreign land for a different country.
Does that mean the UK is going to actually pay soldiers a wage that corresponds with risking their lives to protect this country and its interests? Or is it going to be more of a forced conscription of the poor and working class affair?
I wonder if all the migrants that were welcomed into this country and cared for are going to be part of this or?
A “reassurance force” sounds like a group of people telling you aggressively that “you’re doing really well, it’s going to be fine”.

Europe doesn’t have sufficient arms production capacity to back these guarantees currently.

in the last 14 years, EU including uk, have reduced defence spending
even in good times, war with russia is not an option

It`s time to tell the US (Trump / Vance) to fuck off, they are no friends and they`ve already sold Ukraine out.
Their peace is that Russia gets what it has at present, Ukraine gives back Kursk, no NATO membership, no NATO peace keepers, no war crime trials and Russia brought back into the G7 with sanctions wound down. What a capitulation. All those lives lost for nothing.
I wish Europe and the UK would grow a back bone and start putting boots on the ground in support functions (logistics, air support, naval support, medical) as well as special forces on the front line.
And when Trump throws his toys out of his pram tell him to fuck off as we only deal with real democracies and by the way we`re putting tariffs on you!
Personally although I support the Ukrainians’ right to defend themselves I’m 100% against us going to war with Russia. I would prefer for a deal to be done where Russia gets part of the territory it has occupied and Ukraine will not join Nato. Would prefer if we sort our country out before trying to provoke a real life enactment of Threads.
I’m sure the Russians are shitting themselves that little Britain is going to ‘reassure’ Ukraine.
