Hopefully there are some other mtg fans here. I realized scryfall has bulk data and decided to play around with it. The time series charts only include core sets and main expansions.
I thought “Marjorie Taylor Greene” before “Magic the Gathering”

Bigger sets of mostly new cards with a massive spike in legendary cards, interesting.
Plus an overall increase in card complexity that seems to align with the trend in legendary percentage.

Have you considered incorporating data from supplemental sets or promos to get a more comprehensive view?

Graphs that show Hasbro is determined to milk that cow till it’s dry.

Not the most beautiful presentation but intriguing. Would love to see some labels as to which sets correspond to outliers or changes in trends. At least which sets are beginning and end of the data analysis would be good.

I think quite a few changes here are explained by changes to blocks. Like, core sets used to be full of reprints, and sets used to be smaller to get 3 sets from the same plane and story beat.
And of course them printing a load of legendaries for commander once they realized that makes good money.
