      “Richard Sutton and Andrew Barto won this year’s Turing Award, considered the Nobel Prize for computing, for their significant contributions to machine learning development. The two researchers are now speaking out against OpenAI, Google, and other AI companies releasing potentially dangerous software to end customers. Both scientists are not particularly pleased with how AI companies are applying their life’s work.

      Barto believes that bringing this kind of AI software to millions of people without safeguards is inherently wrong. Using a metaphor, Sutton and Barto pointed out that most or all AI companies are building a bridge and testing its structural integrity by opening it to the public.”

      advocating for less accessibility to AI despite winning a “nobel prize” in computing? yeah, fuck off bud (not OP, the people in the article). this sounds like some posturing for regulation and closed source AI. the last thing we need is tech billionaires being the only ones with the resources and access to this tech to build it. the bridge metaphor is so wrong on so many levels i cant believe these people are real

      Traditionally good engineering practices are enforced after some sort of catastrophe, If someone were to tell the company directory that AI is unsafe, they would just fire then and find someone more flexible

      No body cares. Profits > safeguards. It should be well established by now that before AI helps us gain utopia (if we get there), it will first be leveraged as a tool to one up each other for profits. Like we have done with every single technology so far. Our species is incapable at a DNA level to think like a collective and for the greater good. Until that next level of consciousness, it’s all misery with sporadic sprinkles of goodness here and there.
