The first newspaper to be entirely published in the Asturian language was published in 1901 in Xixón (Gijón in Spanish) and had as its name ixuxú, taken from the name of this “scream”. The newspaper did not have a long lifespan, unfortunately, but it’s worth noting that the 3rd of May was the Día de les Lletres Asturianes, a day to celebrate the Asturian language and advocate for its officiality. Asturian was perfectly capable of being used to write, read and do anything else that Spanish could do, if its speakers were given the chance.
