Yeah sure they are, good luck with that – what a massive waste of time and money.

Might as well try to stop a snow storm by pointing a hairdryer at the sky.

They will be as effective as OFWAT are at trying to hold water companies to account.

I mean it’s massive to police, or maybe not. But these companies need to be held to account.

They are now too big and too dangerous. I cannot stand Xuckerberg, even more after grovelling to Trump.

A monopoly one can say. They’ve been an information monopoly for too long and it seems we don’t break up monopolies anymore. Seems they have too much power to fight it.

Is social propaganda and social brainwashing these days. And on top of that causing young kids harm.

I would love to see a ban, enough is enough now. It’s such a shame that it ended up as a manipulation tool of the masses because of the greedy C*’s in charge that are power mad.

What are they going to do about water companies raping their customers and delivery, slightly better than rain water at extortion prices,?

      > In the case of “user-to-user” messaging services, this includes how they could be used to commit or facilitate criminal offences.

Messaging services need to ban the UK if Ofcom even thinks of targeting encrypted messaging services.

I’ve noticed that Reddit has recently added “UK/EU illegal content” as a report category

The fact that I can’t even read the threatening article makes me suspect that they definitely won’t do anything.

    8. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything illegal on social media ? This is all about control and censorship.

    9. Thankful that due to the US having all the relevant tech companies that we are under their umbrella of the first amendment

    10. What exactly is ‘UK social media’ what social media companies are UK owned? Oh wait…

    11. Ofcom to enforce something? Best joke I have heard all week! Next you’ll be telling me Ofwat are cracking down on the water companies 😂

    12. So basically, the UK government is trying to patriot act social media by using a tragedy that was partly the government’s fault, which could potentially see the government breach people’s privacy even more? Imagine my shock.

The issue is the Online Safety Act as it stands is largely unworkable, like much of the tech related legislation they’ve been pushing through.

Online forums and communities have had to shut down their forums, because the OSA requires them to vet new members that comes onto the platform and means that they literally can’t function, and have since pre-emptively shut down in many cases. These aren’t problematic areas with illegal content, they’re by the numbers hobby and enthusiast forums but can’t risk the financial risk associated with operating an independent platform.

So by trying to “tackle” the tech giants they’re actually just forcing more people onto large platforms like Reddit and others where they can create community pages there and offload the financial risks to the platform holder.

People who want to host and share illegal content will find ways to communicate away from conventional platforms, so the OSA is largely moot before it even goes fully live. Not to mention it’s being used as a trojan horse to destroy digital privacy and security for individuals and end users through their crazy demands for backdoors and breaking end to end encryption.

Places like Twitter need to be held accountable for the extreme content they may hold, but this is completely the wrong way to do it. Our politicians are hopelessly out of their depth and are showing their incompetence with legislation like this.

Ofcom can’t even crack down on Openworld delaying full fibre in rural areas. Ofcom can’t even crack down on mobile networks failing to provide adequate 4G coverage before turning off 3G.

Of### are all unfit for purpose.

    15. fullpurplejacket on

They can’t even get rid of GB News or figure out who’s financing that right wing populist shit show or how to stop them financing that right wing populist shit show… I’ll believe this when I see it.

Start by Twitter first. Just today, I’ve seen multiple tweets sharing videos of actual school children and fantasising about harming them and crying about how they are replacing whites. Imagine being a parent and seeing videos of your child circulating on Twitter, full of racist and final solution comments.

    17. Hahaha.

Are they fuck. Good luck lads. I can’t wait to watch this stupid law absolutely implode once they realize this is impossible.

Define illegal content, and start with all who sit in both houses of parliament …ALL!

its a start, thats the main thing

you cannot give up to the naysayers, who only whinge when harm or damage is closer to home

    20. You’re living in the country that created the premiership and you can’t see most of the games. Ofc there’s going to be people watching streams.

    21. Overstaying_579 on

All I can really say to Ofcom is good luck to you guys, you’ve got a better chance of hitting the sun with a snowball.

    22. Ah yes I’m sure they will use this invasive power of spying to crack down on awful stuff like child abuse material.

Just joking I’m sure this will be used exclusively to crack down on political dissent

    23. You know what ofcom can do for the mental health, sanity and proper political discourse for the country?

      Ban Facebook, twitter tiktok.

Karens, Kevins and Olivers will bitch, mins and cry for a few days but we will all be better for it

    24. Remember when JD Vance said that European governments were getting unpopular with the people and were becoming more authoritarian instead of listening?

He was right, we’ve had so many examples from the UK recently.
