Quality journalism here. There’s no such thing as “car tax” only vehicle excise duty.
Edit: to all the people down voting me. Reddit is getting inundated lately with articles posted by mainstream news accounts to get traffic on their site. I’d at least expect these journalists to use the correct terminology.

A criminal conviction for being late on a £35 bill strikes me as insane no matter what.

They are hilariously bad at accepting any reasoning for things like this.

It’s not the value of the goods or services it’s the crime that has taken place.
My advice either go big and steal something worth stealing but really whatever you do don’t get caught.

He pleaded guilty in writing so he was always going to be convicted…

Only himself to blame.. Made the mistake of not being wealthy, starting up a dodgy PPE company and scamming millions off the taxpayer.

Yes but if you do stuff to underage girls/boys and then say “but I didn’t know” you can be let off with a slap on the wrist. Ridiculous

Funny thing, my road tax was unpaid for about 3 years because I thought it was paid. It would auto charge my card every year but somehow did not auto renew. My card didn’t expire or anything.
I drove my car 3 years with an untaxed car. I paid the year when I realised it was unpaid, but nothing really happened. Was a surprise no one caught me.
Obviously insurance and MOT always done. Interesting experience lol.

Prosecuting someone for forgetting to pay £35 when they did eventually pay, is completely ridiculous. But articles written like this annoy me so much. His age, pension status and MP are completely irrelevant to the “crime”. The car needed taxing a good couple of weeks before his wife died and despite all the other unnecessary detail included, they’ve left out how long she was ill, so it’s impossible to tell if that should be considered mitigation.

Seems like a process issue rather than a “screw the DVLA” which is what the bait is trying to get you to say. Also, the guy is clearly in the wrong and should have paid it, he recognised that (with a guilty plea no less) and paid up (which is all the penalty is), so the right outcome was reached.
And how is it relevant that he’s a “pensioner, 82”? Being old doesn’t mean you get a free pass from laws. Would you be less sympathetic if it was a 45 year old?

CPS take note: THIS is not in the Public’s interest. A lot of things that CPS does not warrant in the ‘public interest’ is in fact VERY MUCH in the Public’s interest.
