Two snow white, phenotypic dire wolves have been created by Colossal Biosciences, the same company that created the woolly mice. This demonstrates the feasibility of this technology to a greater degree than ever before.

Cool names for the 2 male wolves but a strange pick for the female. They could have gone with one of the two female dire wolves from the series but used the Dragon mothers name instead?

Soon you won’t be able to shovel your driveway without randomly encountering 1d4 of these guys

Gonna be great trying to chase them off when they’re rummaging through your bins.

I thought “dire wolf” was made up by fantasy authors.

>What they learn restoring the mammoth, they say, could help them engineer more robust elephants that can better survive the climatic ravages of a warming world.
So we’re fairly resigned to climate change and not doing anything about; so instead, redesign animals to be able to better weather how we fuck up the environment.
I know that is not the fault nor the responsibility of these particular scientists but fucking hell

600 pounds of sin
Was grinning at my window
All I said was, “Come on in”

Nature is what we want it to be.
This is a glimpse of the future right here. Because this “dire wolf” is a reengineered species.
The genetic code of dire wolf was analyzed and compared to that of modern wolves, and distinctions were found that *made* those ancient wolves dire wolves. Those distinctions were then edited back into modern wolf cells, which were then cloned.
This resulted in wolves being born that don’t look like modern wolves. They probably look a lot like dire wolves once did.
Why do it? Because we can. Because it’s really fucking cool.

I know this is unrelated, but for some good solid 5 seconds I thought this was related to an old youtuber called Direwolf20 haha don’t know why, haven’t seen him in years, yet the brain works in mysterious ways….

Except no, not really.
These are just modified grey wolves, _Canis lupus._ Dire wolves, _Aenocyon dirus,_ aren’t even actual wolves and were closer to jackals.

The return of the gray wolf with 20 slightly altered genes.

GM grey wolves. Still cool, but the headline is pure clickbait.

This is cool and all, but did none of these scientists watch Jurassic Park?

Seems rather cruel to bring back extinct animals that the planet cannot sustain.

They’re dire wolves! You know what dire wolves are right? They’re like wolves… But dire.

Hmmm…let’s take North America’s most effective predator, make it taller, heavier and stronger. Let’s recreate a pack animal designed to take down megafauna and house it behind a 10ft fence on 2000acres in a secret facility. Let’s create two males and a female.
I’m all for heralding the new age of de-extinction, but there are a few too many Jurassic Park raptor parallels for me here.
