On this day 55 years ago, the Apollo 13 spacecraft was launched from Cape Canaveral, Fla., on the third U.S. moon-landing mission. The attempt was aborted after an oxygen tank exploded but the astronauts safely returned to Earth.

  1. Which, if you were a moonlanding denier, would mean that in the middle of a series of faked moon missions NASA decided to throw in a fake failure for good measure. 😆

  2. One of the reasons it has taken a lot longer to get back to the Moon is that in addition to Apollo being extremely expensive it was also extremely risky. Had the Apollo 13 failure occurred during a lunar landing it almost certainly would have led to the death of the entire crew.
