  1. Data from [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._and_Canadian_cities_by_number_of_major_professional_sports_teams). Some manual adjustments were made (e.g. separating out Baltimore and Washington DC), so mistakes are definitely possible. Let me know if you catch any!

**Edit: here’s an updated version based on some comments! Edmonton was missing from “NHL Only” and I added a note that Sacramento only temporarily has an MLB team until the A’s move to Vegas in 2027)**

The 49ers play in Santa Clara, and the Sharks play in San Jose. Shouldn’t they both be labeled as San Francisco?

  3. The Minnesota Wild technically play in St. Paul, but we’re the Twin Cities so it doesn’t really matter.

  4. new york should have its own section to denote its got at least two teams in every sport

You really feel bad for Oakland. They went from “all but NHL” to none in about 5 years.

  6. Chicago, Denver, Detroit, Minneapolis & Philadelphia are the only cities where all 4 sports actually play within their city limits.

  7. Would also be interesting to see cities with multiple teams like Chicago having two MLB, NYC with two NB, etc.

  8. I know technically Denver has all 4, but we all know the Rockies are really a minor league team. That won’t change until the Monforts sell the team. Unfortunately, they never will because they make too much money on the real estate around Coors Field and the visiting team fans going to games.

  9. Still really weird Nashville doesn’t have an MLB team considering the state is pretty into baseball, especially at the collegiate level.

i love this, but should be by metropolitan area, not by municipality.

for instance, everyone in the Bay Area watches the same broadcast TV, and travels around the bay to watch pro teams in person. No SF resident thinks the 49ers are a San Jose team, despite Levis stadium being <1 mile from SJ.

Could anyone in Wisconsin answer if there would be a market for an NHL team in the state? As an outsider, it seems like a natural fit.

It’s always strange to me that ice hockey is part of big 4 instead of soccer.

I see there is an error in that the data is saying there is an MLB team in Pittsburgh. /s

Dallas has never had an MLB team. Arlington is not even a suburb of Dallas.

  15. boston does NOT have nfl, the team commonly associated with them is called the **New England** patriots and is based out of the town of **Foxborough**, MA, which is closer to Providence RI than it is to boston.

  16. Might be worth including what these 3 letter acronyms stand for. As someone from Europe I only have guesses as I don’t follow american sports. As it’s an infographic maybe include a graphical representation?

Crazy to think that Houston is the 4th most populated metro in the US and doesn’t have an NHL team and is considered “small market” in the other sports.

This is ugly data. Why not plot these cities as dots on a single four-circle diagram?

And no need for commas here.

  19. Good on San Diego now only subsidizing one Welfare Queen sports team owner.

Clippers left to LA in 84. Chargers left to LA a few years ago.

It’s time to stop ALL public financing of private businesses.

  20. IMO, Denver has the best overall set of four names: Broncos, Nuggets, Rockies, Avalanche. Detroit is probably number two: Lions, Pistons, Tigers, Red Wings. Then a tossup for third: Bears, Bulls, Cubs or White Sox, Blackhawks (Chi) or Vikings, Timberwolves, Twins, Wild (Min)
