  1. TLDR; The activist group Youth Demand, which is calling for a trade embargo on Israel, said their supporters jumped over the barriers and threw the substance [a red powder] in front of the men’s elite race.

So much egotism and “look at me” on display, inevitably a byproduct of social media in some way.

  3. Scared-Mine1506 on

I mean this is literally not having any political effect. This is purely to score points with other activist buddies. Wow, look at your dumb ass go. You just saved gaza, the genocide is over.

  4. Oh well, we’d better let some more criminals outta jail to make way for these idiots.

  5. The leaders of both Israel and Gaza think they can achieve more by continuing the war, therefore it will continue. By ruining some people’s day in London they have converted no one to their cause, let alone stopped a war. Go join the fight for Gaza if you sincerely care that much. Meanwhile, the good weather will bring more of these muppets out.

  6. Another protest, another raft of comments about “how does this help!?” ignoring the fact they then talk about it.

The genocide in Gaza is old news, people don’t care anymore and it’s barely news. This has made it news again, unfortunately if not for novel spectacle, people don’t care.

Emily Davidson threw herself in front of a horse in race, you lot would be like “what has an innocent horse race got to do with women’s suffrage!”

  7. So what type of protest *do* people like then? Cause every time there’s a gathering, parade, paint thrown, songs sung, roads blocked, media campaigns or anything else basically people get on here to complain that it’s just annoying, not impactful, negative etc

Why don’t they target the people who actually have some clout – our MPs? All they’re doing with this kind of stunt (and Extinction Rebellion before them) is pissing off the people who might actually support them.

  9. gggggenegenie on

Great argument, I get that and wholeheartedly agree. But this had no impact on the race, has not highlighted their cause and really, because of the nature of the event, will be seen as totally pathetic by those who could be swayed to agree with them.

  10. Brave_Ring_1136 on

Right so as they want an embargo against Israel, I will now trade even harder with Israel just so I can say do the opposite of what these fuckwits want

During the Spanish civil war, people from Britain actually went over to Spain to fight for what they believed in. Now here’s an idea, why don’t these muppets go to Gaza and fight for what they believe in……

Nobody in power is making decisions based on stupid actions like these, and they need to realise that. It’s like toddlers having tantrums, hoping they’ll get their own way. Ultimately, they’re their own worst PR, because all they do is turn even more people against them and their cause.

Pro Gaza and I’d have put the boot in had I seen him. There is nothing negative about the marathon, it’s a celebration. All this twat has done was encourage reactionaries. Show-off wally.

  14. beardedbaldy1874 on

Oh a couple of upper class twats who no doubt live off mummy & daddy money & have nothing else to do but pretend to ‘fight for a cause’ they probably know nothing about.

I’ll scweam and scweam and scweam.

Their trustees should remove their access to their funds.

My mate works for Dulux and he reckons that the Middle East crisis is being agitated by ‘big paint’

  17. I agree that protests against Israel’s actions should be happening.

This is not the place to do it though.

A large number of charities raise money and awareness through events like the London marathon.

There are a lot of other times/chances to have protests for a cause like this, disrupting charity events is a bad choice.

The apathy in these comments is frustrating.

I absolutely appreciate that there are performative am dram types and those who care more about their own ego than results but, protests work. There are companies and institutions withdrawing investment from Israel right now due to protests, there are numerous cases in history where persistent protest has gained vital rights we still have (and often take for granted).

Buying into the idea that protests are about getting public support is kind of a nonsense.

Decrying protestors in general as pointless and ineffective is exactly what the people these protests target, want you to think. They want you to believe that protest does nothing whilst they continue to exploit you and your environment.

I for one would rather suffer the occasional performative protest than buy into the lie pedalled by the ruling class that protests don’t work. They do.

  19. How did I immediately guess it would be Palestine?

(Mostly because the eco warriors use orange paint while trying to discredit their cause).

  20. meandering_fart on

The marathon is raising money for good causes (including humanitarian aid for Palestine). Takes a special kind of moron to protest that.

  21. Due-Beginning-8388 on

The funny thing is that all these protesters who support Palestine would never get support from any Palestinian

  22. Longjumping_Stand889 on

These protesters seem to be in a closed loop where the protest is the point. There’s a possible future where encountering a protest will be a daily occurrence, train’s late, bus diverted, supermarket shut, it’s fine, it’s a protest. It’s not for or against anything, you don’t have to do anything about it, it’s a protest.
