“Official figures suggest that the number of Romanians accessing UK student finance increased from 5,000 a decade ago to 84,000 in the last academic year. This means that a staggering 15 per cent of Romanians in the UK are currently receiving student loans.”
“People who enrol at university are entitled to access up to roughly £45,000 a year in support.
The first £9,535 covering their annual tuition fees is paid directly to the establishment they attend. Up to £13,348 a year more is then handed out as a ‘maintenance loan’ which goes directly into the student’s personal bank account.”
once again the Tax payer is being taken as a mug not a a chance will any of this get payed back
I thought you had to be a resident to get access to a student loan!?! If not that’s a crazy loophole
I was visiting a friend in bulgaria last month, she introduced me to some of her friends all Bulgarian, all studied in the UK.
At some point we started talking about uni and student loans got brought up, they were all laughing about how because they went home they wouldn’t ever need to pay it back so the UK government just gave them tens of thousands of pounds for free.
Ah yes, I remember these so called colleges. Used to have loads of people doing Oil and gas management courses who could barely speak English ringing up asking for money. I thought they’d all been shut down but apparently the scam never ended.
Why anyone not born here gets access to this type of stuff is so far beyond me… the UK is so dysfunctional and incompetent.
*”It told how agents – ‘essentially salesmen who advertise the courses online and are paid commission for every student they find’ – were operating on social media sites such as TikTok, Facebook and Instagram, where they posted adverts claiming it was possible to ‘join a university without any qualification and get up to 18,500 pounds’.”*
Like does nobody have their ear to the ground to check how some of these funds might be misappropriated? Do we not care? Or is there simply not enough civil servants to provide any oversight? We must be a bloody laughing stock for the audience this is aimed at.
*”‘While some students were genuinely there to learn, they were aware of entire families enrolling on the same course and that students admitted they were paid to recruit their relatives”*
*”And while Oxford Business College’s courses no longer provide access to SLC loans, those at an astonishing 340 other ‘franchised’ providers very much do.*
*No fewer than 138,000 students are currently enrolled on their courses…*
*Quite how many of them are actually doing any work is, for now, unclear. As is the question of what proportion will ever pay back their generous taxpayer-funded loans.*
*For the really scary thing about Oxford Business College is that it could represent the tip of a very expensive iceberg.”*
Meanwhile we’re at each others throats talking about what a woman is or isn’t…
Does this get added to the crime tables? If not it will hurt their chances of winning the season.
i go past this “college” a lot. It’s vacant, literally no one is ever there
Honestly crazy. Used to walk past it daily on the way to college and still do occasionally week to week. Rare to see much to do with Oxford on this app.
Why are mainstream media & government allowed too invite vitriol on Europeans when the majority of overseas students are Nigerian or Indian?
Pay no attention to the class war, look at the shiny race war over there!
The SLC will just create a Plan 6 or whatever theyre up to now to recouperate these losses from the next cohort
If anyone bothered to read the article, you’d find that the University was taken over and at some point it started making money through questionable means.
At the same time, this “university” sent their people to knock on people’s doors to get them to sign up to their courses, and in exchange allow them to take a maintenance loan so both parties would win? (Although the article doesn’t clearly state the link)
Daily Mail says there are 85,000 romanians taking student loans, but this includes those who are genuinely studying proper University courses, not that 85,000 are under investigation for fraud.
So you have two British citizens leading a University that has been in public sight and could have been closed years ago, and the best Daily Mail can do is blame immigrants. Classic.
Does anyone have a more detailed article about this story from a more reputable newspaper?
Edit: so I just went on gov.uk and see that you can only apply for maintenance loan as a EU citizen if you are settled status, became a British, or are Irish. So the only Romanians that can apply are permanent residents or British. So I find it interesting that those who would be inclined to remain here are also the ones supposedly taking maintenance loans. If so, they will be tracked at some point.
Yeah, the Eastern Europeans in the UK kind of Facebook groups are full of these adverts, basically saying: study with no qualifications and get student loan.
State resources in this country have been shilled to death
Fkn mess after mess after mess. What a total schittshow.
So the private investors the Student Loans Company sold the debt to are going to be the ones to lose out on money right?
**Right???**
Damn immigrants and their *checks notes* easy access to funding for higher education
Weird when university is free for Romanians in Romania. Remember competing for a job internally against a Romanian who was willing to work for a lot less pay and no student debt. How times have changed.
I wonder who approved the policy of allowing foreign students to access these loans, it seems daft, sure some students might stay after graduation but surely the majority would always be returning to their country of origin? Was it perhaps overlooked with Brexit?
Once again, the British taxpayer is being taken advantage of for the benefit of others.
When will we grow a spine and stop this ceaseless theft.
almost like funding the universities directly would be a better system
