Ross comes from Old Norse hross – which means horse. -land is a common ending in Norwegian farm names, it usually means the farm was established around 0-500 AD

Often a name like Rossland – Rosseland would be connected to the Old Norse religion, where sacrifice of horses was a common thing. You can often find nearby farms with names like Frøyland – Frøy being the god of fertility.
