Buzz Aldrin must be regretting his endorsement of Trump now.

Reports had suggested that NASA would take it on the chin, and that is indeed the case: The skinny budget slashes NASA funding by $6 billion compared to enacted 2025 levels, from $24.8 billion to $18.8 billion — a cut of 24%. That would be the biggest single-year cut to NASA funding in American history, according to the nonprofit Planetary Society.

Cutting an organisation’s budget by 25% is like cutting off its head.

The brain drain the Trump admin is creating will impact US advancement and GDP for years, if not decades.
Unless there’s some kind of massive upheaval in response to Trump and MAGA (think the Trust Busting and New Deal eras) then the US is going to be in a slump for a long time. Likely long enough to lose global hegemony.
This will be the legacy of MAGA.

I remember in his first term, trump was so certain that he didn’t accomplish anything noteworthy, good enough, so in his 4th year, he secretly asked Nasa if they can send a man to mars before the end of his term, something that he never campaigned for and never expressed a desire to do before. Nasa said they couldn’t. trump then said he’d give them whatever they want. Nasa still said they can’t. The desperation was so obvious by the fact that if he truly wanted this, such a big project should have been started at the beginning of his term.

This is just fucking rediculous at this point. US government should be leading the various STEM sectors / segments in all fields, establishing the bar for acceptable standards / guidelines / regulatory specs / other, and bringing the private sector up with it by offloading projects onto those entities that specialize in the various relevant areas of said projects so they, too, can advance their own industries.
Why is everyone so god damn dumb about the greater interconnected web our government entities weave?

Cutting NASA to “beat China to the moon” by canceling the mission that actually lands on the moon… that’s cosmic-level irony. 🚀🪐

Meanwhile there’s more than enough budget to have a brand new military parade on his birthday

The best way to ensure a project doesn’t get cancelled is to name it after the almighty Trump. You can always rename it to its original name after 2028.

Guess you guys aren’t going back to the moon for at least another five years.

I do wonder if there will be an increase in budget to the Space Force, which I know is different and different goals, but a lot man kinds technological progress has been through the military (as sad as that is).

These budgets from the White House are mostly performative in modern times. They never make it through congress as they are.
