  1. I thought every kid in private school was going to flood into the state system and cripple it though??

It’s not a tax hike, it’s closing a loophole – the first of many that need to be sewn up.

  3. But the British media spent months repeatedly arguing that this would devastate private schools, they would all close and all the pwecious pupils would be forced to attend state school with commoners.

    How can this be?

  4. No, you don’t say that companies pretending to be charities while having a shit ton of money might have misrepresented the effects?

  5. >Some had warned the policy would force students out of private school and into the state system, and whilst this has happened to an extent, councils in March said there had been “no obvious impact” on applications for state sector places.

You mean, people with lots of money, actually could afford to pay after all?

What happened to all those struggling working class families, on measly six-figure salaries, who were going to go bankrupt?

  7. This is the second* positive Labour story I’ve heard today – what’s happening? Something is seriously afoot! (Or maybe they’ve *finally* hired a PR team?)

*The other being Starmer has already completely smashed Johnson’s prior investment in levelling up the North

  8. It’s October why are we referencing things councils said in March? That was 7 months ago.

But how much VAT was reclaimed by the schools for capital / building projects.

The analysis of the total VAT reclaimed the schools, the VAT netted by the govt and the (if any) reduction in private school places (with subsequent state school increase) at the end of the government will be interesting.

If labour do not secure a second term, I can see labour may have just given a tax rebate to the schools at a net loss to the government.

Weird, because I scores of articles over several months about how it would bring about the apocalypse.

I thought every kid in private school was going to instantly leave because paying out 10k was affordable but 12k was insanely high

Dumb comments on here. It’s based on numbers since January.
    1. People cant move school mid-year
    2. Parents will try not to move their kids if the children are one year away from GCSE or A Level
    3. Then they will transfer to state sector
    4. More people will go towards State sector over time/in medium term

Finally this policy was main cause the private school my kids went to closed its doors forever after close on 200 years of operations, wiping thr legacy of their youth off the planet.

So fu k Labour for this policy…class warfare and nothing else They have never changed

  13. So all the scaremongers from the mail, telegraph etc were all totally wrong. What a surprise.

  14. But, but … we were told that little Tarquin would have to go to ordinary school with the plebs …

Turns out that the rich have plenty of money, so I say keep squeezing

  15. Private schools were crying bloody murder, but still increased fees by 14%, on top of the additional VAT?

  16. Where are all the conservative commentators who were saying it was a bad move, wouldn’t raise any money and just push kids into the overstretched state sector now?

  17. Desperate_Caramel_10 on

Turns out the wealthy will make up any old lies to avoid paying their fair share.

In what way are they more influencial? How does this influence manifest itself? What point are you making here?

Do you really think that these people have the capacity to fix the state system?
