Astronauts say the ultrasound machine was very useful in diagnosing the medical emergency. Also, they look extremely happy and are holding up a finger for “first”
“First”? The first crew to be evacuated for a medical emergency? They are extremely happy about being first for that? OP has me confused with their speculation on this photo.

Well that narrows it down a little bit. Ultrasound is used to diagnose a bunch of medical emergencies like internal bleeding (trauma), ectopic pregnancies, appendicitis, gallstones, kidney stones, blood clots (DVT), heart problems (tamponade, low function), aortic aneurysms, pneumonia, and pneumothorax

I figured it was a baby as well since they’re super strict about no pregnancies in space.

How would this have worked out on a trip to Mars?

Why are so many people in this thread assuming it’s a baby? Ultrasounds are used for a variety of diagnosis and aren’t just gimmick tools for pregnancy announcements.

They don’t even need to be specific about the exact location of the issue. But I wish they would identify the generic location this issue was found. They can remove gender entirely. Was it the abdomen, a limb, the chest, head…what?

People, chill. I’ve had like 8 ultrasounds of my leg. It’s never been pregnant, or at risk of being pregnant. Ultrasound doesn’t automatically mean they were checking for pregnancy.
